I have seen this before and am still confused to its meaning and how to do it.

I recently installed ScanMyReg. It offers a defrag option in the program.

When you click on this option, it displays a warning telling you to close all running programs before proceeding.

How do I know what programs are running and which ones re safe to "shut down" while this defrag program is running?

How do I "turn them back on" when it is finished? Just a reboot?

As a side note, I weekly run CCCleaners registry cleaner. It seems to work fine, but the firsttime I ran ScanMyReg, it found over 400 errors. CCCleaner has never found this many. Why would one cleaner find signifigantly more than the other, obviously these two programs are not "created equally"

Please help in my confusion.

As always thanks in advance.

Your help is always greatly appreciated.

Look at your task bar, are there any programs there like internet explorer, Word, etc? If yes, than close them.

Another option is to start the task manager. It will show you what is running in the application tab. You can close anything in the Application Tab.

You just restart the progam by click on it.

Basically, defrag rearranges the files on the hard drive. The program does not want another program to be writting to the hard drive well it is arranging the files.

I would not recommand a registry cleaners since they sometimes do more harm than good. If there is a problem with the registry, the best option is to backup your computer and reinstall windows and all programs.
Windows 8 is a useless OS that Microsoft released that has many flaws and bugs. DO NOT USE IT. Use Windows XP or Windows 7.

Hi Sid :

As to WHY different "cleaners" find different "amounts", I
feel you would educate yourself by reading what several
"Microsoft Most Valuable Professionals" say on the subject
by reading at least a portion of the "Should I use a Registry
Cleaner" topic on the Aumha Forums at
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099 . The subject matter
starts where it says "Letter to Fred wrote : "
