I highly recommend Lenovo products. They are well made, cool running, and so far seem to last. Take a look at their Essential series, and the Idea Pad Z series.
"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'" -- Isaac Asimov

You prob will like a Mac of any sort best of all. My pref is the MBAir for it's packing/portability capability. Slim, sleek and sexy as they come. My fav is the 11 inch base model, but I have had the 13 inch MBAir and also the 13 inch MBPro. Any of the Macs, you will be glad you paid the extra cost vs any PC laptop.

I like loaded laptops and I've had 2 Acer laptops the 9810 with a 20.1" screen that is over 5 years old and never been in the shop. I gave it to a friend and it's still being used. I have an Acer 8950G with a 18.4 screen that is 2 years old and never been in the shop. I added memory and a SSD to the laptops myself. I also recommended an Acer to my girlfriend and it's over 3 years old and not been in shop.
