With LogMein Ignition, you can remote to your PC that you left on at home and do everything. Some things are tedious and torturous on the small screen but you can do everything if you need to. Depending on how much "work" you think you might be doing during the trip, lugging along the laptop is generally worth it in the end. But if all you need is email and the ability to respond if there is an (unlikely) emergency, the smartphone is ok.

If you're traveling all the time, make sure to pick up an Otterbox case. I just got the Defender for my 4S from phoccessories.com. I'd recommend it for the on-the-go techie. :)
