I bought a box of DVD disk and it says: 4.7GB size and 120 min movie length. But most of my movie collections (AVI format) are about 6.5 GB size but less than one hour long. Can I still burn my movies on this DVD disks? Is there any software to compress the size of my movie before I burn it please?

You're going to have to compress them down to a size that will fit within 4.7GB.

Handbrake is some excellent, free software to do that with.

Another option would be to use Dual layer disks if your Recorder has that function. Actually, you can cut the record speed back. The ones your mentioned, are probably recorded at it highest speed for quality. When cut back on the record speed, you can get more on the disk ( up to 8 Hrs ), but you sacrifice quality.

For an odd, commercial solution, I would suggest NERO. As it can transcode the movies to MPEG2, and make actual DVD's out of them.

I've been using DVD Shrink for years...

...and using Handbrake the last year of so when I want to rip a movie to ~1GB (like for my Kindle Fire).
Note: DVD Shrink can't bypass copy protection.

Are you trying to burn the video to disc to then be played back in a standard DVD player as a standard DVD? Then just about any DVD "authoring" software should do the trick ("authoring being different than "burning" in that it will "convert" the video file in the MPEG2 that a typical DVD player can "understand" as well as allow you to create menus, etc...this is the format that is used when it "talks" about 120 minutes).

If you want to just burn the "raw" AVI file onto a DVD for backup purposes or maybe, then you could try using regular compression software to compress it first and then burn it to disc. Or as another suggested, try dual layer discs (might require a new optical drive).

If you want to burn it to disc in a "computer format" (i.e. MP4, Divx, MOV, WMV, AVI, etc) that a newer DVD player might also be able to play, then you might have to covert the file to a format that uses smaller file sizes than AVI. Of course, you would need to make sure your DVD player can support that file format.

You can compress that file but I am not sure whether it will fit in 4.7 GB or not. Compressing that file would turn it around 5 GB but to compress it more you need a tool that will convert the actual movie clip to a lighter format and you can burn it on 4.7GB DVD.
