I have been capturing movies from the dish to PC for years, just analog I dont do hi deff. I capture with Windoze Movie Maker then use WMM to edit out the commercials then used WMM to process the resulting WMV file. First PC was single core took about 130 mins to process a 2 hour movie, next PC was a dual core it took about 90 mins. New PC is 6 cores it takes 50 mins. New PC is double the clock speed of the old dual core so I thot it should be processing the WMV file much faster.

All PCs are AMD.
The processing is CPU intensive and uses almost no memory.

I found a little program that lets me pick and choose what cores I want WMM to use, so instead of all 6 cores I set it to use 4 cores 3,4,5 and 6. Now the same WMV file is done in 25 mins, twice as fast as using all 6 cores.

My guess is that WMM is made for 4 or less threads.

Hey Snorg, Probably. As far as i can see, Hex cores are pretty much a waste as there are relatively few programs that actually take advantage of multithreading.

Ya Coastie, thats why I put WMM on 3,4,5, and 6 leaving 1 and 2 for the system.

Looks like you've had this in mind. Some of the newer video drivers do take hyperthreading into consideration and can really make rendering and editing a snap. Next we need a recording driver that will block the commericals, I've seen some that just blank them out but not cut them out. Blanking is easier to edit but is still time consuming. Leaving cores one and two for the system makes it faster when there aren't that many processes running but isolating would parcel the work and allow the rendering to run without interuption from the system. Slick.

Good move and the reason why you saw the the performance kick. :D

Ya, sure even if there was an algorithm for cutting out commercials they still plug their junk over up to 1/3 of the screen rite while youre watching your show, that really makes me POed. Luckily I captured most of my old shows a few years ago when that was not so prevalent.

There's a reason why I don't have cable TV anymore. :D (not that any of it is really worth watching)

Ya, I dont pay for dish no more, the commercials are just too insulting like the febreeze ones where they they show me people sitting blindfolded in piles of rotten crap. No way am I paying to see that kinda horse pucky. I dont like most of the new shows anyway, about the only thing I miss are the late nite talk shows.

The dish has different feebees every month tho sometimes there are movies worth capturing.
