After 65 min on hold, (can you say huge call volume!) I spoke with
ATT Tech support and within 30 mins my phone was unlocked !
You will need to connect your iPhone to iTunes to backup and restore
for the process to complete. But it is worth it......"free at last,
free at last, Thank God almighty I am free at last"......lol

Don't they ship with both GSM and CDMA radios in them? It doesn't matter anymore what carrier you're on unless you have an iPhone 3GS or lower.

WHAT iPhone do you have? and did they give you any flak? I have had a 4S for about a year, but started originally with iPhone 4. Ive now been out of contract for 2 months, account in good standing, no contract left, and account WAY older than 90 days, and they said IMEI not eligible because iPhone 4S is "exclusive" to ATT. Which is obviously wrong. Any ideas? did you unlock 3G or 3gs? does it matter than ive since added a 4S to my account a long time ago, and have used it for half my contract, which is now over? let me know...thanks

SURE it matters. Even with 4 + 4S, yes they have dual radios, but you cant just pop in another sim card for your iPhone 4 or 4S, because they are still LOCKED to att. So no Tmobile, etc.....but if they UNLOCK them, you can travel overseas and use local Sim cards, and not pay their extortion style roaming fees. Im not sure if unlocked, but i dont think it would work with verizon, not for sure though. But the phones, although dual radio, CDMA + GSM, are still locked to ATT (ATT versions).......just like Verizons are locked to Verizon.

Did you buy your iPhone 4S outright? I'm pretty sure simple math debunks for iPhone 4S for a year claims, as it was released in October, 6 months ago. Also, AT&T only offers 2 year contracts, so if you purchased the 4S on contract there is no way you are out of your contract. Obviously if someone else purchased it for you and it was a locked version there may be a bit more footwork to show them it's not a subsidized phone.

technically they (iPhone 4S from only) could work on Verizon and sprint but they won't because the ECCID is not registered already in Verizon and Sprint's networks and they do not feel like adding them.

The only way you could have that and not be in a contract is if u paid full price for the phone, if you did that at an APPLE store then your phone is areadly unlocked, if you did it at an ATT store then it is locked and they should do it, remember this is new for the att network to unlock them so they may not have all their reps be up to date on their policy. Apples KB list on carriers that unlock iPhones isn't even up to date yet.

The phone that was unlocked was a iPhone 3G, and there was no problem at all getting it unlocked. I do not understand how you have had the 4S for a year, when it first went on sale October 14th, 2011 ? There is no way a 4S would be currently eligible for a out-of-contract unlock, unless you got out of your contract early, and paid a hefty penalty. To unlock any iphone you must be out of your contract. If you truly are out of your 2 year contract, I would call ATT back, the GSM 4S is not exclusive to ATT and when unlocked should work on many GSM networks in the world. According to Apple: "
The unlocked iPhone 4/4S works only on supported GSM networks, such as AT&T in the U.S. When you travel internationally, you can also use a micro-SIM card from a local GSM carrier. The unlocked iPhone will not work with CDMA carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint. "

I called them up and got an unlock case number. they said that they will send me an unlock code by the 15th. This sounds off from what you and others have written. Do you have to restore the iphone before itunes unlocks the iphone? thanks for your input.

They do ship with dual radios. However unless they've made changes recently the GSM iPhones have the CDMA radio permanently disabled.

For those unlocker's who were told to wait for an email or phone call by April 16, check today and connect to iTunes. I connected my iPhone 4 to my iTunes and it worked. iTunes showed the "you iPhone is unlocked" message. I'm a happy camper.
