In this day an age of phones with reasonably decent cameras, and widescreens on both monitors and phones, the square images are annoying, and the silly hipster/retro twee effects are annoying too.

"Otherwise, he says, 'they'd be boring on their own.'"

That's it. You have crappy photos, apply some effects, boom-suddenly they're interesting? Not really. They're just crappy photos with some effects randomly applied.

Instagram is popular for a simple reason— it makes taking decent-looking pictures easy, fast, and cheap. You can shout and fume about how a picture taken via Instagram pales in comparison with a real, well-done photograph taken by somebody who spends time and thought on what they're doing, but virtually NONE of the people who would do that are using Instagram. Instagram isn't replacing actual photography, it's replacing mass mobile photography done by people who just want to share a picture of what they're looking at or doing or eating with their friends, and it makes those pictures look a little nicer nine times of out ten. Instagram doesn't replace photography the same way Twitter doesn't replace books; it just makes it more accessible to the masses, and no matter how hollow or artificial it is, more creation in the world isn't a bad thing.

PC GPUs become more powerful- we want faster more realistic games.

Phones and tablets improve and we eschew the chance to take advantage of the increased capabilities by playing 70's arcade games or "draw me something badly"?

I don't get it... I'll leave Instantgram to the Christmas round robin emailers.

Next week- "why is the symbian s60 emulator proving such a big hit with iPhone owners?"

Since when has creativity been the result of getting hand fed a few cliché filters? Further evidence our culture is on the decline and every day gets dumbed down a little more.

But what can instagram do that is actually worth doing?

No one was shouting or fuming. Creation itself is not a good thing or a bad thing. Your comment was just a long way of saying that you concur with the author. I still don't really get it but I'm not shouting about it.
