I have a laptop that runs a little hot and occasionally may restart itself. I am assuming from being to hot. I looked at Newegg for cooling units that sit under the laptop and on your lap. Which would be a good one to get that is a decent price? My budget would be from $10 to $25.

Thanks!

First, run hwmonitor to see what the temps are like. 50-70C is common for a laptop CPU, maybe a bit hotter (up to 80C). For the hard drive, it shouldn't be higher than 40-45C. Second, get some compressed air and clean the air vents. If you're comfortable with this, disassemble the entire laptop and clean the fans and vents completely. I don't have any experience with laptop cooling pads.

You should be careful enough while buying laptops. Make sure your laptop has a properly placed fan that's not using the base to release heat. It might not help you laptop to cool down because that place would be covered up either by a surface or with your lap.

When I was shopping for a laptop to give to my wife, I walked down the lineup of LPs in the store and felt around the sides and the bottom. It turns out that the Lenovo I chose was cool in the store and is equally cool here at home, even after running all day. No cooler needed.

Hi Rain, What you suggested was a CPU cooler for a desktop. These are Notebook coolers: http://www.amazon.co...node=2243862011

I have two Gateway alptops, one 17" and one 15.6" and both are cool sitting on my lap, but do have a cooling pad under the 17" one that my Mom uses. If I get that HP up and running that my Brother-in-Law "disposed of", I may need that pad for that thing. :D

Or you could do what I did - take a cardboard box and some 80mm fans, cut holes in the box for the fans, use a hot glue gun to glue them in, and connect them to a 12V power supply.

You could do that or there are some pretty cheap coolers you can get. I wouldn't pay $50 for one, but I would consider anything $30 or less. I like helping the economy, unfortunately everything is made in China, so I am helping the Chinese economy or so it would seem. Samsung and Toshiba products are assembled in Mexico then shipped into the U.S. ( Thank You NAFTA ).
