I stopped by the AT&T Store and was told that they did not perform the function, but to call customer service by dialing 611 from my phone. So I did that and spoke to a CSR who took about 10 minutes to get the required information from me and check all the item she needed to check. She then approved me to unlock the iPhone. She however could not do anything for me. Once I passed her requirements she then transferred me to the tech support. I was informed that it would be about a 10 minute wait to speak to someone. I waited the 10 plus minutes and spoke to the tech support person. He asked all the same questions the the CSR did, and then determined that I was eligible to unlock my iPhone 3GS. He then took my email and said I would receive an email from AT&T that provided the directions to unlock my iPhone. He could not do it from his side. I needed to back up my iPhone and restore via iTunes. So I waited about five minutes and recieved an email as promised. It asked me to back up and restore my iPhone. Is iTunes and upon the completion of the restore function it would give me a screen that indicated I had successfully unlocked my phone. I did as the directions stated and it took and hour or so for iTunes to compete all the processes, but I was successful in unlocking my iPhone. It took about 2 total hours from the first 611 phone call to the completion of my unlocked iPhone.

Before everyone goes off the handle and these comments that "ATT takes days to process requests", ATT isn't taking a long time. Yes it takes mere minutes to do it.

But ATT WILL NOT sacrifice their more important services just to unlock a phone. It takes 8 days (but UP TO, not an absolute) to process the request, because there are only a handful of people doing the unlocks.

You can unlock the phone yourself, pay some guy 25 bucks on craiglist (maybe 10 if you are REALLY nice) and they can do it for you IMMEDIATELY. Or buy the software for a hundred bucks and do it yourself.

If you want ATT to do it FREE, then you have to wait, because it's NOT repeat *NOT* a priority to unlock a phone, nor is it high on ATT list of things to do.

So don't go bashing ATT because they take a long time, its PEOPLE (as in customers like those lamos that want to write a check in the checkout lane, or don't know how to read instructions at the ATM machine) THOSE are the people holding things up.

People as really dumb questions or request an unlock just because they can ... even if they don't REALLY need, those are the people causing delays, I assure you.

The crazy part is ATT will tell you they won't unlock your phone yet you can buy an 'unlocked' I-Phone direct from the Apple Store. I bought a new unlocked 3GS running IOS5 when the 4s came out so not being under contract I can use it any way I want.

That has changed. It can be unlocked as long as you're out of contract, but please wait a week to let the crowds and backlog die down.

I don't think we have these choices. Is baseband 04.12.01 is unlockable yet? I agree with you, 8 days is not a long time to wait for something that was 1)previously unavailable and 2) not going to be hackable for AT LEAST a year (according to Cydia's trends on unlockable basebands)

This entire article is a gripe about how you can't unlock your phone easily. I appreciate you want to do it immediately, but AT&T is an inefficient giant company that just went live with the policy. Instead of helpful advice, it's a long depiction of your headache. Sorry you went through it- but if you expected it would be a seamless process day one, you should know better.

How about this: Wait a week or two after they announce the policy is in place, then unlock your phone, then post helpful advice to people on how they, too, can unlock their phones. That would be a useful article.

What? What software are you referring to? Rebelmicro SIM cards? Jailbreaking and then unlocking, what???? If it's via jailbreaking it's not available for all firmwares and other forms of unlocking aren't permanent if it's not official. So well??? Where else genius?

I bought an iPhone 4 from Amazon and I'm not an AT&T user. Will it be eligible?

It's about time ATT unlocked the iPhone for those out of their contract!

One problem remains... ATT's Wireless Online Support website does NOT mention this fact at all (as of 04/13/2012)!

The company won't currently publicly disclose it to the public :(

people shouldn't complain when they are unlocking it for free. You guys act like crackheads without your phone. 8 days is nothing compared to not being able to unlock it at all. Be nice when you call in. Today is 04/13/02 I called it & I don't even have an AT&T acct. My iphone 4 was purchased from a coworker the rep was really nice, and assisted me as much as possible & processed my claim.

First off dont talk bad about people who write checks, maybe they write checks because they CAN, secondly you have no clue on how to unlock an iphone its not that easy, its not like other phones, so your the lamo for talking sbout things you dont know, i made an account just to tell you that.

First thing I want to say is to Pman005. My friend your grammar is horrific. If you are an illegal alien I encourage you to take some English classes at the local college. Illegals can go to school for free in America while the rest of us pay for ourselves to go and for you to go. Take advantage of it.

Concerning the Iphone 4 unlock I am having the same issues with AT&T. Once I had finished serving my two year prison sentence with AT&T (and let me tell you it was very painful at times), I called them up and immediately begun the process of unlocking my phone. I am now 40 days out and it has still not been done. I'm not surprised though it is AT&T after all.

i've been waiting a month. I've called NINE times (paying long distance fees every time). The phone has been out of contract for over a year. It's clearly a deliberate policy.
