My back-ups run at night. $24 per year seems like a pretty small price to pay for keeping this task from sucking up valuable CPU cycles during my workday.

As the actual cost of running your PC continuously is really not significant, how about running a Grid Computing application? it runs in the background, only when the CPU is available [Low priority], And this allows your otherwise idle computer to perform some very useful work. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/

I leave my computer on 24/7 so my backups and virus scans perform without using cycles when in use. This is worth $24.00 a year. Just ask someone how much online backups cost per year.

I need to access my computer remotely when I'm away for days at a time. If there was an app that only put the computer to sleep at night then woke it up again in the morning I'd use it. Otherwise I need it on all the time
