Hello I have a 32 inch Toshiba HDTV from Best Buy (Purchased in Feb 2011) and it works fine except a strange thing that everytime I turn it on the picture is always too small and then I have to readjust it with my remote to get the picture back. The Problem is it's all the time!"
I can never turn it on and have the picture just right like an old tv." Is this a known issue? I'll look again in the manual but I'm not sure why this happens? And also what happened to those Digital Tvs from like 2006-2007 with the Speakers being built on the side of the tv? Why did they stop making those and now you have to buy external epeakers for the tv just to get it really loud? Has anybody noticed that the speakers are now built on the back and the sound is terrible! What's wrong with this picture?

Is an HDTV better than an LCD or Plasma? What's the difference?

"HDTV" just means the TV is high definition (720p/1080i/1080p). That can be LCD OR Plasma. Virtually all TVs nowadays that aren't CRTs (the old fat tube ones) are HDTVs. Also, in case you're wondering what an LED TV is, it's an LCD TV with an LED backlight (LCDs create a picture, but don't illuminate it). Regular LCDs use CCFL backlighting (this is not as common now as it used to be).

Also, if you want speakers that are better than the TV ones and are cheap, look into a set like the Logitech S220 (I have this, and it's good enough). Plug it into the headphone jack and control the volume from the remote.

There are so many flavors ofHDTVs with audio output options and speaker configurations. Knowing what you want and shopping for those options has to be considered before purchase. Some ingenius arrangements can be used to reflect rear facing speakers forward without much fidelity losses. Larger sets, usually 42 inch or larger do have front facing speakers as they are usually wall mounted and this would cover up those rear facing elements. Some sets I've installed have had those rear facing speakers but with a little hot glue and small pieces of plexiglass positioned to reflect the sound back forward. Few sets I've looked at have any audio outputs. The unit I bought, a 47 anch Visio has some very good sounding speakers mounted on the bottom and face forward. It has no analog audio output but does have the optical output which goes well with many newer audio amps. There are converters available to convert the optical to analog for input to a regular amp for those who don't wish to replace their older but still usable amps. A good look through the user manual may reveal how to SAVE a setup once you've made the needed picture adjustments.

Good point - if the TV lacks a 3.5mm audio output, get a male stereo RCA to female 3.5mm adapter and plug the speakers into that. Every TV I've seen has an analog audio output (I'm not sure if the tv's volume controls work on that though).

LBD: I've spent the last year looking at HDTVs to replace my failing 50 inch rear projection set. Very few I looked at, LGs, Samsung, Sony, Phillips, Toshiba, Visio and many more, had audio analog outputs or connections for external speakers. The optical output seems to be the most common and often the only output port. Many a sales person asked me if I needed help while crawling around behind the display units to see what input/output jacks are available with a particular unit. I opted for the Visio unit as it had the best picture of any of them. It lacks a memory card port butthat wasn't what I was interested in. It also had no PC(VGA) port but that wasn't a concern as my new desktop had an HDMI output to connect to the set. Adjustments on many display units were so out of whack that it was almost impossible to really judge them side by side but the Visio unit was consistantly better than any other. I found the one I want at Target and being that I can get a 15% discount, that's where I got it. A unit that was MSRP at $750. was marked at $630. and I got it out the door for less than $600. after taxes and disposal fees. Very, very pleased. The problem was getting analog audio into my surround sound system and that's where the optical to analog converter came in. The volume on the set has no effect on the optical level, which is no real concern for me.

Could you please describe how the image is too small? For instance, are there black bars on the side?

Also, what are you watching? An over-the-air broadcast, cable, satellite, a DVD?

What model of Toshiba? I just bought a 19" and installed it over the weekend, and if your model is of the same 'family', I can help, in addition to whatever you get from Mr. Spector. The Toshiba model, if like mine (see my topic on it here in this subforum), is almost infinitely configurable, but without the user's manual, you might not be doing the right Menu options. So let me know...
