I also like the ' Wrench' icon better. - (Perhaps a 'Hex-Nut' would be an obvious symbol as well!
Bottom line is that Google would be better off leaving the 'Original' AS IS! - The 'New' look doesn't ADD to any thing, & actually Lessens the features of the original. - I know these folks want to keep their design jobs, but hey, move on to something that 'Contributes' to a product or feature. - It wasn't 'broken', & should NOT be 'fixed'.

When I mouse over the icons, the text labels appear. To be honest, I wasn't even aware that there was a change until I read this article. I would say this is much ado about nothing.

Some people have vision problems or new to gmail and that little "gear" is NOT all that noticable if you are not used to gmail and do not use it everyday.
So the only thing thats much ado about nothing is you being a jerk or just a smart@ss troll.

The "Wrench" is good. Especially since Google uses it on there IE toolbar. Would only make sense to me :/
