NOOOOOOooooooo! I am seeing reports that the QM67 chipset will not be supported by Intel. Only because they want people buying new laptops, not for technical reasons.

I haven't seen that. That could be the only reason I could think of. I'm thinking, my first upgrade will be the MOBO to the Z77 chipset. Newegg is still out of 680's anyway and that can wait. The Ivy Bridge isn't due til Q'3 I think. Probably go for the 3750K although there isn't a lot of difference between that and the 3550k, except price ( Just like the i7 2600k & i5 2500k ).

Well, it looks like it's out! I haven't actually seen any IB CPUs for sale though. Basically, it looks like, for gamers, it's not worth it - a little more CPU power, slightly lower TDP, and that's about it. And, it gets hot when you increase the voltage and it doesn't OC as well as SB.

The real difference seems to be the mobile market. Intel may finally catch up to the 6450m! :D

The announcement was supposed to made on the 23rd, but it on't be on the market until Q'3 in all likelyhood. Have to wait until it gets tested by PCWorld, MaximumPC and others to see what the real deal is. So far as i know, there has yet to be any independent testing of those things yet.

Toms released their results. And PCworld claims to have tested them - though their testing methods are lack-luster at best.

Think I'll wait for MaximumPC to come out with something.

I was very interested in the physical construction of the chip. They have taken to doing a substrate with the elements on top, another layer of substrate and more elements. Like stacking chips on top of each other. Now all they need to do is figure out how to include the multiple layers and then etch or cut the elements with a laser to create the junctions. Stack them up as deep as you need and burn it all at once. Very interesting approach to advancing the technology.

lol At stock speed, I think it's supposed to run cooler too.

Yep. It is 22Nm Architecture as compared with 32Nm for the Sandy Bridge. Also, you have three settings for TDP as well. As long as you have a decent after market Cooer, I don't thiink temps are really going to be an issue with OCing, just liek the Sandy Bridge.

Got my June issue of MaximumPC today and they had a huge article on the Ivy Bridge along with test results. Looks good, although they say NO to moving from a 2600K to the 3750K. The TDP is 77 on the Ivy as opposed to 95 on the Sandy. The Ivy will give you 3.0 Support ( USB & PCIe ) on even the older chipsets such as the H61 & P67. I was thinking of the P8Z68-VPro Gen3 MOBO that came out right after I did this build. I don't really think there was a hardware change from the P8Z68-VPro MOBO. It may have been in the BiOS ( Need to check for BiOS updates ). The only difference I could see was the PCIe 3.0 on the GEN3 board. They also had a nice artcle on the Nvidia Kepler ( GTX 680 ). Still trying to sort things out with the artcle as it is pretty big with a lot of stuff. As for the Kepler, they test drove an Acer Timeline M3 Notebook with the Nividia Geforce GT 640m 128 bit path with up to a 625Mhz Clock on either GDDR3 or GDDR5. They ran BF3 on Ultra with a frame rate in the upper 20's to lower 30's ( multiplayer maps ) and in the Low 50's in High. Not bad. They also said that the Z77 Chipset wasn't an improvement over the Z68. Still have a lot of digesting to do. About the only thing ceratin at this point is that I will probably move to a GTX 680 though.

I'm not convinced that there's any reason for you to get a Z77 motherboard, even if you get a geforce 680 and ivy bridge i7. Man, and I'm still running on ancient 2.25 year old hardware... :D

I know what you are running and you are fine. :D I am still going over things and the only thing I am convinced of at thai point is the GTX 680 ( Newegg stays sold out on those things ). I think I can get 3.0 PCIe support with a BiOS upgrade on this MOBO, but not sure as I am still looking into that. With the Z77, you get 4 USB 3.0 ports instead of the 2 that I have with the Z68 board. One upside to the IGP on the Ivy Bridge ( HD4000 for the 3750k ) it supports DX11 whereas the Sandy supported DX10.1.

If you're willing to pay $180 over MSRP, you can get one here: http://www.amazon.co...35574491&sr=8-1
