Coastie, just to clarify, there still is a heat spreader, but they used thermal paste to attach it to the die rather than soldering it on. I think it's a good idea to keep using them, simply because it protects the die a bit.

Must admit I'm concerned about it.
It appears to be only an issue when over-clocking.

Your other link Brian states how much you can OC a SB and stay well within temp limits where as the IB could hit up 20 degrees hotter and it doesn't OC quite as easy.

I can OC no where near WJ but I would like to push it and the SB would be easier to do that.

All that said, I still like the IB and hope to find reasons why a guy with a phenom 2 should get that instead of the SB.

I wonder if that just reduces the voltage of the CPU. After all, OOTB, the CPU is getting quite a bit more voltage than it actually needs to be stable. For instance, the E350 in my laptop runs at 1V or something like that when idle, but I undervolted it to .825V and it runs just fine. On my desktop, I reduced the voltage a little and it's completely stable. I'll reduce it some more sometime if I get around to it.

Hey Rommel, with the UEFI BiOS, OCing is a breeze and you can get 4.4 without any problems.

Nope. It reduces the TDP on the Ivy Bridge. Lower TDP, less heat.

Nope. It reduces the TDP on the Ivy Bridge. Lower TDP, less heat.

What I'm saying is that it probably reduces the wattage by reducing the voltage. How else?

You know, there are times even I am forced to ask, why bother?

The chips hit 3.9Ghz natively. Who cares about getting more than 4Ghz out of it?

It has been temporarily removed. Right now it is stuck in storage. While we were attempting to finish purchasing our new house, the wonderful loan officer found herself fired. The bank that owned it would not wait the couple of weeks needed to locate a new loan provider and stuff through the paperwork. Well, in the end, that was it. Credit isn't the problem, nor is the money on hand. But I decided to work with a local loan officer that didn't communicate reality, and did more to damage my credit than help. Word of advice, if you ever have someone tell you something that makes you think "how does that work?", then it is probably bad advice. As it stands, she ended up getting fired, likely for her wonderful advice she handed out, not only to me but others. The problem is that I didn't find out that she was toast until we got too lat along in the contract. The answer I got back from Bank of America when I told them I had to find a new lender, was that I had 2 weeks to close. If it couldn't be done in 2 weeks, then the house would be sold to a cash investor they had located. That was a month ago. During this time, because we THOUGHT the whole deal was settled, and everything was good, we opted to lease the home until the final paper work was done. This, because our apartment lease expired, and rates would go up 50% to lease month to month. So we moved into the house, got screwed, and ended up finding a new apartment after it all went south.

This has been a very, very trying couple of months.

SO, all is good at the moment, we have a roof over our heads, and the family is safe. As long as we have a place to live, and food to eat, I am a happy camper. We are actively looking for a new loan officer, and honestly trying to figure out if we have a case to sue that bitch, and get her license pulled. One day, hopefully soon, we shall have a home of our own.
