ok so idk what is wrong with my keyboard but if its plugged in during powering on of the computer it will not get to bios it will just remain on a blank black screen until i remove the keyboard. afterwards it says that the system has failed to boot several times blah blah blah and i tried to enter into bios when this happened so i plugged the keyboard back in and it froze everything even the count down to just boot. keyboard is a hp pr1101u

Edit : here is a video of the issue if that will help

Hi. I couldn't really tell much from that. The screen that came up, looked like the screen that would come up on reboot if you did a hard shut down saying you had an improper shutdown and giving you start uo options. Usually you can use the arrow keys and scroll down to "Normal Start Up" and hit Enter. The intial strt up appears that it didn't pass post, for some reason, but as far as I know a keyboard wouldn't prevent post. If you can find another keyboard, I would try that and see if it makes any difference.

the screen that appeared after it finally booted was the linux grub where i would select if i wanted to boot to windows or linux. If i want to get past post i have to remove the usb keyboard. I'm using a very old ps2 keyboard atm and without it i would be screwed.

How long has this been going on? If it just started recently, using your old keyboard, try to do a system restore to a point before the problem started.

You have an hour to edit a post you make.

I suppose a short could cause a problem like that. It's awfully strange though - what happens if you plug the USB keyboard in after booting into an OS? What happens if you use a different USB port or computer?

after i boot into the os and plug in the keyboard in question it acts as if there is nothing plugged in. Keyboard doesnt work and it doesnt affect my computer. This applies to all usb ports and i have tested all of them with a laser mouse in each port the red light comes on. I do not have a secondary computer to test keyboard on.

Can you borrow a USB keyboard from a friend or plug yours into a friend's computer? I think the keyboard may be dead though, if it doesn't work at all. I assume the num lock, caps lock, etc lights don't work on it either, right?

I guess it's dead then, and the PC hangs when booting because it's trying to detect the keyboard but can't.
