Ms Word Compatibility Pack Security Updates For MS Office 2007

I run MS XP Professional with SP 1,2 & 3 plus a whole host of security updates.
PC is a Gateway Laptop circa 2003.
I recently received a Word doc in the "new" format.
The document is a legitimate word doc. No malware along for the ride.
Upon trying to open it, I got an invitation from (I think) Microsoft
to download a compatibility pack.
The site was http://www.microsoft...laylang=en&id=3
The compatibility pack seems to work fine without causing other problems.
My Question Is ... I am now getting MS security updates for Office 2007.
Do I really need to install this stuff for Office 2007 as it is NOT otherwise installed.
Will these Office 2007 updates cause trouble for me elsewhere?
Many thanks.

Most likely, those are updates for the compatibility pack, and thus are fine.

I believe the format for Office changed in Office 2008 as the default format for Word Docs the file was saved in was XLSX and the older was just XLS. The same thing happens in Excel. A person with a newer version can save the doc to the older format but if they forget and save to the new format a person with the older version needs the kit to read that format.
