In the film days, this effect was achieved by taking the pic thru an embroidery hoop (?remember those??)over which nylon hose was stretched, then a cigarette (?remember those??) used to burn out a central hole for the sharp rendering.

Interesting. I could do the same in GIMP.

About Paint Shop Pro, I remember Corel acquiring Jasc and unlike Paint Shop Pro 8, Print Shop Pro 9 and later version requires activation, which I'll have to contact customer support if I activate too many times like when it comes to reinstalling Windows or whatever I was doing. Sometimes, I'd have to resort myself to pirating even if I purchased Paint Shop Pro 9 or 10. *sigh*

I guess that's the real cost of Linux. Paintshop Pro is less than $100 and is the program that the author used for this demonstration but requires Windows.

Actually Gimp is a Windows program also...there's probably a lot more windows users of Gimp than Linux users.

Point taken. Another good reason for me not to assume. Mea Culpa

I should have known better my disdain for the GIMP was nurtured on Windows. There are other competent graphics programs available for Windows that are not as expensive as Photoshop (which I use daily on the Mac platform). No one who is using Windows should feel stuck with the GIMP.
