Hmm, I'd like to see a Windows 8 convertible ultrabook. I've heard that Microsoft is pushing hardware vendors to make ultrabooks with touch screens, not make it a convertible and I'm sold.

Regardless, Windows 8 (not RT) on a Samsung slate, with docking station and keyboard, would be AWESOME!

typo, should be, "NOW make it.."

This appears to be a step in the right direction. What Pro adds is rarely needed by Standard users. Much less confusing than the 7-8 versions sold now. Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, etc.

The article say's it a "bulk" license of the business version...you know for big businesses.

I will not touch this garbage, irritating and poorly designed OS with a ten foot pole.
Microsoft is going to be a huge loser with this piece of crap.

The biggest thing MS needs to do is create a simple feature on install or first run that allows those of us without touchscreen monitors (the majority of your customers MS) to select the desktop as the default UI.

Instead of calling this lousy OS Windows 8, it should be called Windows Ain't.

I have never seen anything in the Business editions that could not simply be included in a home/business combo. Its just Microsoft's way of getting some to pay more. They should have a PC editon and a tablet. End of choices.

I can't believe all the grumblers in here...have you guy's even really used windows 8?

I dual boot 7 and 8...I have to use 7 for some things so I do have to go back and forth.

8 has shown me it's faster to use, not just because it is physically faster (and it is faster than 7)....
but I have found the interface to be faster to use too.
Now that I've used the metro and learned how to get to all the needed places to go while managing a pc...when I go back to 7 I'm not liking the old start menu button so much anymore.
The new windows 8 get's me to where I need to go faster with less clicks, and as time goes on I'll be able to dial it in even better.
I've found it alot easier to get to computer controls and file properties. And the Task Manager is extremely useful.
I will have to download even less 3rd party tools then I did with 7...and 7 reduced the number of 3rd party tool needs alot over xp where I had massive amounts of 3rd party computer management tools.
It's getting way better folks.

and people wanting xp...man...what a dinosaur...you really like it's start menu with it's drop down lists and looking around all the long lists of text? and the xp desktop with all those icons scattered all over....xp people should at least upgrade to 7 as it's so much cooler...and windows 8 is an improvement over that.
I do still have an xp machine I use for another purpose...so I do have to use it and sure do notice the differences.

lol...and 8 is FASTER....in everything...on the same hardware....I thought that's what we all wanted over all these years of tweaking....I didn't do much tweaking with 7...to tell you the truth I don't miss the tweaking...man I butchered so many installs of xp trying to get it to run faster. And my xp machine is very fast for what I use it for. I tend to keep my machines lean and healthy.

I say all that while being picky as heck...and if I didn't find it easier to use I wouldn't have said so.

I'm really trying to like the whole Metro thing. I really try and adapt to navigating this new OS. But to be honest its not that great and some stuff is just not intuitive and practical. If I can skip the Metro desktop and stick with the tradition one. I'm OK with it. But then why upgrade? Windows 7 does just fine.

Wow! *Only* four versions! And we're supposed to be happy about this? Give me a break. What about one or two versions? Why do they feel the need to strip out features for lesser versions - and the software is still expensive!

And to top it off, this chart only lists three? What's the mystery version?

They state in the first paragraph that the 4th is 'one for large enterprises who buy in bulk'... which is really not a '4th edition' at all unless it has features not found in any of the other three.

Either I need a caffeine hit or the writer of the article does.

If, unlike Windows 7 Professional 32 bit, it won't run Virtual Windows XP, then I will stick with Windows 7 forever. I still have some very good XP programs I use and will continue to use as it's too hard to learn new software as you get older. Screw MS for not realizing that older people can't just keep learning and relearning forever. Eventually enough is enough!

I agree with the fact that windows 8 alot faster i also dual booted i feel that so far to my experience that Windows 8 is like ios, stuff runs in background until you turn it off like apps and what not. You can run it up to 3 gb of ram easy. I love the metro interface i didnt like it at the start but ive gotten used to it. I judt dont like how My computer and Network has to be manually added to start menu. Graphics are amazing I can play need for speed undercover in low-medium setting but on Windows 8 I can have them on High. But it comes dont to preference really. Like My grandparents have used everything from windows 95 and up. BUt i dont see them going to windows 8 anytime soon

all you have to do is click on the desktop icon and the metro UI goes away and it looks almost like windows 7

So what would be the point of windows 8 in that case?

but what most are complaining about is that every time you boot you have to do that and that microsoft should let you chose it as the default and then it will always boot to the desktop with out having to chose it every time!

RT ought to kill touch screens - or Windows 8.

I can see separate Windows for phones and perhaps tablets but every computer should run the same version. The addition of an Office product or Virtual Machine should be able to be added as desired but not standard.

Does this mean that Windows 8RT will replace Windows Phone 7 on ARM phones?

There will be no home/business combo edition because home and business simply don't use the same software. A business that is not enterprise big should have to go with the Pro version.

Amen!

I spend most of my time in using dual monitors in Photoshop, Acrobat Professional (using markup tools), Excel, or Pro Tools. MS needs to recognize that for some users a touch screen will never work.

Long live Win 7.

Although the author wouldn't know this, there really is no real difference between Windows Home and Business versions. Both contain business network features -- but in the "Home" versions, the UI's for these features are removed. That's why malware damage is more diffucult to repair on Home versions than on Business versions.

The rest of the differences are just which minor, extra add-ons are included.

M$ needs to make a true "home" kernel that really has no business networking features in it *at all*. e.g. Neither home users nor home applications have any need for "policies and permissions". Removing these from "Home" Windows versions would increase security and performance for (strictly) home users.

Until then, all Windows "Home" versions are like a huge pickup truck bearing a big sign that says "This is a compact car."

I bet most people here have never even gave windows 8 a chance. Its actually a great OS. Yes the start button issue can be annoying at first but once you get used of its actually great. Give it a serious try and I think you will like it.
