Google got one huge advantage over Oakley and that is piles of cash.
They could go an order 5 million glasses, which would drive per unit costs down. One of the best ways to drive down costs is to scale up production. They can also afford to take a lost on the glasses as well.
I am not sure how you can say Oakley is further along when he not even testing them in front of journalist, like Page is. When he taking them out and testing them in front of journalists or even letting them have a go, then I would be convince that they are further along than Google.
On public evidence Google is ahead.

Interestingly enough, Oakley fires first. On Halloween, Oakley will unveil and start selling their "Smart Goggles" for the avid snowboarder and skier. What makes it more interesting is that Apple will be selling these Oakley goggles as well as they have partnered with Oakley on creating these built in GPS, Apple App aimed, smart goggles. I think now Oakley has taken the lead, but we'll have to wait and see.
