Is it possible to install Windows XP using an external optical drive? Would it cause any problems? I am using a regular laptop.

Thanks to all!

It'll work just fine.

It should work.

Also there are ways to make a bootable USB flash drive with windows XP.
Windows 8 is a useless OS that Microsoft released that has many flaws and bugs. DO NOT USE IT. Use Windows XP or Windows 7.

Do you do have the CD of it right?

Read these articles for guide how to do it:

Just to clarify - you can, using unofficial tools, install XP from a thumb drive, but you cannot boot the regular OS that way.

The tools work well. I have used them in the past. The USB works on almost all systems I have used it. There was 2 computers that were old that this did not work on.

Can BartPE boot from USB flash drives (UFD)?

Probably. But booting from UFD is not always stable at the moment. It is very dependent on what exact hardware is used. Some bioses cannot be set to the correct emulation and other systems hang or abort when the windows USB drivers are loaded. Tricky stuff, maybe better support in future...
Try Pe2usb: Installing Bartpe To Usb Flash Disk.
