How Secure are your internet passwords?

It's very disturbing to me that when I access a bank account OL, I'm limited to an 8 character password.

My E-mail account has a 30+ character password.

How easy is it for anybody to figure out an 8 character password?

So my Question is: Why isn't there an UnBreakable, Internet STANDARD, for passwords?

Considering the almost limitless combinations of letters, numbers and symbols available, a well chosen password could be uncrackable, even with just 8 characters. Using numbers inplace of letters can really make guessing impossible, but could make them easier for users to remember. Replacing letters such as "o" with number "0" zero or letter L with number one. Just to name a few permutations.

The most important part of the password isn't the length it's the combination of character types. (examples: numbers, lower and upper case, other characters.)

I think dictionary attacks are mainly successful with really weak passwords, like 'password' or '12345'. (say, if you want a laugh, see this)

The most important part of the password isn't the length it's the combination of character types. (examples: numbers, lower and upper case, other characters.)

I believe that recent studies have shown that it is actually the opposite...the length matters more than "randomness" of the password. Obviously, you still need to have some "complexity" to a long password, but from what I have read long passwords (16+ characters) with "full words" (as long as there is some randomness to the words) are more secure than an 8 completely random character password.

There are many standards out there even Microsoft. Those standards are recommended standards. I'm a software administrator and some of the enterprise software allows be to set characters restrictions and length restrictions. Some websites also have a visual password strength bar when you create a password .

You can also google and get a list of the top 10, top 25 used passwords. There is a difference in the list between men and women.
