I believe it is an established right to record TV shows on a DVD for home non commercial use. Since around mid 2011 AT&T has introduced an electronic blocking system that will not allow this. I have around 30 years of motor racing on tape or DVD originally off air then from Dish. The internal DVR's are of limited size and I wish to have my archive copy on DVD. When trying to record, either direct from the set tp box or via the output of the TV a message comes up saying this is not allowed. AT&T claim it is the content providers who demand this but when checking with a senior executive of a provider he claimed this was not so.
Anyone out there with a solution?
If I were lucky enough to get the programs off air one could record with no problem but I can't

If the company airing the content sets the "copy protection flag" to '1', then the video can be recorded to your DVR only, and only once. Sometimes, the DVR ignores the flags, and flags everything as non-transferable. Good luck getting ATT to admit they screwed up.

Oddly enough I had this problem after I got FiOS TV ( Dec. '06 ). At some point, I tried to record a movie that came on late and it was the last showing. Al I did was screw upa Blank DVD ( actually a bunch over time ). I had one that I eventually set up to record on VHS which worked, than I transferred it to DVD.

Thanks for the input. Won't record to tape either. I wondered if my newer recorder had protection software so tried much older VHS and Beta recorders also with no luck.

How exactly are you trying to "record" on to the DVD? I assume you are using one of the video output ports and connecting it to either a DVD recorder or a computer with a DVD burner. If so, what video output port are you using? Have you tried one of the "analog" output (i.e. either S-Video or RCA/composite video output? I kind of suspect that you are since you said you also tried recording to VHS and even Beta tape...which almost certainly means that you were using an analog output.

If you are using an analog output, then it is almost definitely something on AT&T's end. If so, then as waldojim mentioned...good luck on getting AT&T to "fix it".

I was using a fairly new Samsung that was a Combo VHS / DVD ( upconvert ) machine and hooked up by way of COAX from the box ( HDMI to the TV ). The one problem I had is that the thing did not have a tuner, so had to use the box. I had to finagle with the set up, because when I turned off the TV, the Box shut off as well. As I said, I was able to get it to record to VHS, but not to DVD.

LOL. UVerse has got a NERVE placing encryption on their videos--as if their selections are RECENT or POPULAR!!!! I've seen movies on their PAID CABLE--that have long since been shown on regular TV broadcasts!!!!

I don't know who is responsible for the selections on HBO, but in all honesty, she/he/they should be subject to CORPORAL PUNISHMENT!!! The movies tend to be long-outdated OR movies that "tanked" at, (or were too terrible to make it to)--the box office!!!!

I mean, "Back to the future", "Robocop"--really????? Decent movies (back in their day), but how many times have these movies been run on regular TV--and yet SOMEBODY thought it would be a good idea to run them on PAID cable?????

Come on, guys!!!!

I've not experienced this. Either with DTV or cable. I've always been able to playback any movie from the DVR, output from the box with HDMI to the HDTV and by composite/S-video to the VHS/DVD recorder(Funai). Once a VHS copy is made, then a full copy from VHS to DVD is easiest and then can go anywhere. I have transposed hundreds of VHS and just as many VHS-C tapes this way. Once on DVD, it can go into the PC for editing and display back unto the same HDTV. Now HD content is another story altogether. Media content can come from anywhere, once in a composite video/audio SD level, tape is the first logical approach. A PC with enough power and display functionality could replace the need for any content but over the internet. Input of personal media should never be a problem. Maybe AT&T has got a leg up on the others or are just stepping out to gauge the public reaction. Just like "throttling". I have AT&Ts fiber optic from the pole but only use the DSL and twisted pair, no TV.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but to my knowledge, just about EVERY cable provider does the same thing except maybe for the traditional network stations (i.e. NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox)...but soon they will not even have to leave those unencrypted due to a recent FCC ruling if memory servers.

Comcast recently did that to the unencrypted channels. Man they have to try and make things hard... (I don't have Comcast cable TV, but my grandmother does.)
