Fixed Width Webpages

Do you prefer webpages that are fixed width or ones that aren't? Personally, I wonder why all of them are optimized for 1024x768 screens when few people have those anymore. On the other hand, I've heard that fixed width is easier for web developers.

If you want to really design a site, you're going to make everything a good width. And you want to pick the narrowest width that is still in common use. 1024 makes a lot of sense, that way.

Besides, there comes a point when it's difficult for a person's eyes to handle a wider width.

If you want web pages without a fixed width, go to the site's mobile version.

Of course, the mobile version is really barebones. And besides, for instance, the forums don't have a fixed width, and I think it's just fine.

1024 X 768 is a standard aspect ratio as minimum for the current technologies so they always recommend that. Moreover I would like to tell you that you're right. Web Developer always like static page width and it is easier to optimize.
