I'm thinking about getting a smartphone (I like the galaxy nexus in particular), and was wondering if you guys have any idea of what plan would work well for me. I rarely use voice or texting, but will probably use data a bit. My family is currently on verizon (which has good reception in my area), but the data plan is $30/month there, plus an activation fee, plus an upgrade fee, and the nexus costs $150 if you're upgrading (on amazon with verizon service). Greedy assholes... Tmobile happens to have a $30/month plan that has 5GB data, 100 min voice, and unlimited texting (seems good), but I'm not so sure that they have great reception in my area (my dad has an off-contract iphone 4s with a tmobile prepaid sim card, though I wonder if the fact that it wasn't designed for tmobile has anything doing), and when you factor in the phone for $450, that's equivalent to nearly $50/month!

Interesting... the nexus on verizon (assuming you buy the phone on-contract through amazon) works out to about ~$47.5/month (using the shared pool of minutes my family has, which isn't included in the estimate - phone upgrade, upgrade fee, $10 because it's an added line, and $30 data), and on tmobile prepaid it's $30 monthly and $455 for the phone, ~$49/month.

Note: I'm taking the upfront fees and dividing them by the # of months, plus the monthly service fee(s), to get those numbers.
