Due to disabilities I am in bed about 75-85% of the day. Thus I do not have a desktop computer but a nice gaming system(Asus G51VX)
Shortly after I updated all my e electronics in 2009 I choose to go wireless at home(apartment really)
I bought a Netgear router and installed everything as perscribed in the directions. Even making sure to pasword protect the system. I then installed a Photosmart printer C4780 from HP. Recently I learned how to change channels on the router and picked one that seemingly would be better.
I do have my Blue ray player hooked up to the router but by network cord instead of wireless: I did this becasue I think speeds may be better over the cord than wireless to watch Netflix etc etc.

Now my brain keeps wondering if I missed a step someplace such as software.

So the question after all that is said and done above is this:

Am I missing a step?
Did I forget something like software?
I don't take my laptop outside to much like to the library, Starbucks etc so I think I'm okay or am I? <_<

Hi. As long as things are working as they should, then all is fine and I wouldn't worry about it. As for taking the computer outside, as long as you have good security apps and practice good surfing habits you should be fine.

In regards to your suggestion about security: do you have any suggestions in the realm of "free" security software.
Reson why I ask it that I am in an area where there are at least 6 other wireless operations such as stores, restaurants and other local places.

Hi, as for anit Virus www.Avast!.com is good and for home use, it is FREE, but still leaves you with finding a good free Antispyware app. I am using MSE ( Microsoft Security Essentials ) on here and a laptop and it seems to be good. I have Used Avast! and the paid version of SUPERantispyware ( $39.90 for a lifetime subscription ) which were good.

Thx for your help and suggestions it was a great help and gave peace of mind. Some of the things you mentioned were already in place. So its good to know that I seem to be inline with those with more experience. There was something in todays email about a free download from this website which I think I will tryout; reason is due to all the business and houses around me who seem to have wireless abilities. The FREE download is called "Hotspot Shield" and the addy is as follows... http://www.pcworld.c...nl_ddx_h_dlfeat
Again thanks for all your help and suggestions.

Hi. From My understanding, as long as someone doesn't have your WEP Key, they can't really tie into your service. I do have one neighbor who tends to leave theirs open. :D :P
