This is exactly why there is room for a successful MSFT/NOK integration.

Confessing to be only a casual cell user, it makes me glad that I've got just a dumb cell phone that only makes/recieves calls and nothing else. Sure it means I don't get any of the nifty things a smart phone can do, but I also don't have to worry about any of the bugs.

I have been rooting my phones since 2010 and can safely say that I have yet to experiance any of these problems. I love the modding community because it does extensive testing and depending on the user base, will do as many updates as neccessary to fix minor problems that may arise.

Then of course there was the Bell Galaxy S that had a tendency to brick itself after flashing it (due to faulty internal storage). The only solution was to send it off for repair.

Heard Apple had some issues with their latest tablet right at release and how long did it take them to update it? This isn't just an Android problem.

You forgot to include the HTC Blunderbolt I mean Thunderbolt, and its 4 month long reboot saga that concluded with an update that was originally promised to be Gingerbread, but was Froyo instead.

What typically happens when "updates go bad" is the carrier and the OEM revert to a finger pointing contest. Testing these updates is virtually a practice that is left up to the customer any more. Why? Because in order to test an update you generally have to pay someone. That's an expense that is low on the priority list.

This is the reason why users need to be allowed to own the hardware the way they do with computers.

The problem is more of a carrier issue. When carriers such as AT&T update a phone with their own version of the update, they load it with bloatware and their own customized stuff. I agree with MiguelLopez that rooting and especially putting in third party ROMs e.g. CM make it much better.

Absolutely agree. Rooting and putting in third party ROMs like CM prevents the bloatware that carriers load along with the "update".

The author explicitly covered that issue if you had read the article. He also covered why Android has a greater problem with this.

That is all fine and well but do you really think that circumventing the standard smartphone upgrade process should be a requirement for maintaining and using your phone? That would be like telling someone you can't drive a car unless you know how to takeout and rebuild it's engine. Your expectations are destined to fail if that is what they are.

Yes, we all "hear" many things. Unfortunately, some of the things we hear repeatedly are totally unfounded or turn out to be of no material consequence.

Do you recall the specifics of those issues you "heard" about?

The battery problem mentioned in the article is also a problem for the Skyrocket.

I have an HTC Thunderbolt and did not have reboot problems. What service was this? I am with Verizon.

Every time I see where someone has a problem with their smartphone I thank my luck stars that I never got one. I was waiting for the newness to die down, but I now believe it never will as there is always going to be a 'newer' smartphone out 'next month'. Now I have malware and bad updates to look forward to....NOT!

By that logic you've never flown on a plane, owned a car, or a computer.
If you're waiting for the "newness" of technology to die down, or for a piece of tech to come without bugs, or problems, then you'll be waiting forever.
So I can only assume you live on an Amish farm somewhere, and old Bessy the horse is your mode of transportation.
You may say "thank your lucky stars", but to a normal person, you're just a dinosaur living in an age that isn't built for you.
