Hello all,

Recently my wifes computer (desktop Windows 7 64bit) starting having trouble with IE8 (i think its 8 might be IE9). It takes FOREVER to open up any webpage (sometimes 3-5 min). I also noticed that anytime you click on the tools incon in the upper right hand corner OR the Tools button on the left corner it locks up IE, and i have to open the task manager and force close it.

She is connected via a Linksys wirless-G card which connectes to my Linksys wireless-N router. I read something on line that says if you are using a "G" card to connect to a "N" router you can have some trouble with connectivity, BUT its worked fine up until the past week or two which is when we started having problems with the slow connection and IE locking up any time you try to access the tools.

I ran a virus scan w/Superantispyware and with MSE - I have dumped cookies, cleared cash, disk clean ect....
I had windows check to see if there was any driver update for the wiresless card, but it said i had the latest drivers installed already
I (from the computer) disconnected from the router and re-connected
I ran the windows 7 trouble shooter to see if it could find any problems - according to windows she has full bars for connection so its getting a good signel from the router, but is just running SUPER slow

Any ideas why its running so slow??
Any ideas why IE locks up any time i try to access the tools in the upper right or left???

any help would be great!!!

Hi. I don't know what you used to clean, but I would run CCleaner if you didn't use that as well as the registry tool in that thing ( it is safe to use on a non regular basis ). I would then use Auslogic Disk Defrag and do a defrag. You also might want to run www.malwarebytes.org ( The FREE version ) to be sure there are no nasties in there. As for resetting the router, you need to disconnect it and then cut the power to the router for a minute or two. Power the router back up and reconnect it.

Thanks for the quick response

I did have malwarebytes installed on her computer, and tried to run it this morning but it needed to be updated. When i tried to run the update it took over 20 min to d/l the updates and then it said there was some kind of error. So i removed it from her computer and then downloaded it to a USB stick from my pc and installed the latest verion onto her computer. I will run it after i finish running the CCleaner (which is finished), and then i will run the Auslogic disk defrag (which is running right now).

I will let you know how it all turns out

Thanks again for the help.

Wanted to give a quick update:

When i try to update Malwarebytes definitions i get a error saying "Program_Error_updating (0,0 no address found...so i am running it without the definition update just to see if it finds anything.

(fyi-it said my definitions were 19 days old)

UPDATE:

Ok the good news is the internet speed is much faster now!!! So thanks a ton for all the advice (I think the main thing that helped was for me to disconnect my wifes pc from the router - then unplug my router for a few min so it can reset, then re-connect my wifes pc).

Now the only thing left i need to figure out is WHY IE locks up any time i attempt to click on the tools button in the upper left or upper right or even if i use CTL+T ??? Any ideas?

Ok so looks like i'm all good now!

Did a google search and apprently the reason for IE locking up when ever you hit the tools button is because of a feature installed along with Windows live essental called Family Safety. All I had to do was go to uninstall>live essental>select family safety>then restart the pc...problem is solved.

Thanks again for all the help today!
