'Refreshing Windows' have no need.. it will block several disk space and your all installed product will be covered... you have to install your product again to use it....

The vast majority of users who will eventually be forced to use Windows 8 are anything but power users. I'm in my 60's and most of my friends use a computer for simple everyday tasks such as email and web browsing. A lot of them don't even know what a newsletter or forum is all about. From what I see of the Windows 8 metro interface, confusion will be rampant. Why won't Microsoft give users a choice to let most of us do what we need the way we already know how to and are comfortable doing. We don't need to learn operating our computers all over again. What a pain this will be for the millions of casual users out here.

Then just stick with Windows 7. I actually think the majority is going to be younger people using Windows 8 because it is so similar to the OS's being used on many tablets and smart phones.

It's too bad that Microsoft hasn't learned the lessons of OS/2 and Vista: don't mess with the GUI. The smartest thing MS did was to create the START button and make it easy to see lists of things (apps & data). Desktops are not tablets. Desktop users are not social network junkies.

Why is Microsoft trying to fix something that isn't really broken. The Mac interface is still number one (I'm a PC user).

Sticking with old versions isn't always an option.
I've always thought that someone could make some good money by (re)programming various softwares' user interfaces... for the very young, the technology challenged, and older users (or anyone else) who may choose simplicity, less advanced 'features', stability... or those who have declining mental ability. Those user groups share a need for simple usage... there is an audience who can be more enabled to use current technology.
And I mean not only Windows, but iTunes and any other software that has a multitude of features which may be unnecessary and overly complicate the user interface for a large number of users who just want basic utility.
Not everyone wants to learn new tricks, use advanced features, or jump through the hoops designed by the original software creators... BUT ...they may still need the advances in security, or new interfacing with new hardware that doesn't support 'sticking with old versions'.
In fact, most software designers should provide simplified versions of their user interface, with an advanced option for the technically adept (and that isn't synonymous with 'young').

I am making the move to ubuntu and keeping windows 7 anyways. I can see why microsoft says that their profits keep shrinking.. lol. They will really shrink after the release of windows 8. For those of you who don't like it, don't buy it. Lets put microsoft in debt

The $ sign is a sneering derogatory anti-Microsoft attitude...not an objective, intellectual assessment. And it does detract from the credibility of those who use it. There are very few corporations that make "good decisions for end users" and virtually all of them make decisitions for maximizing revenue, and at higher levels, maximizing shareholder returns... product becomes secondary to corporations. CashFlow is King. The almighty dollar is not Microsoft's sole domain... Apple has that leader position now. MS does survey its users... of which there appear to be many satisfied customers, as well as the un$ati$fied. Many people work at MS, not just corporate officer$. I like and dislike MS and Apple ...although I don't take the time to use symbology to show it in every post, 'like' <3M$ or <3crApple. sigh. It's just tiring to see the sneer$ sometimes. I like linux too, I just don't use it a lot, but there are times.

Jared and many other PCW journalists appear to be completely unaware of M$'s "no changes" stance. They seem to think that M$ will listen to them. To M$, end-users are just an annoyance... ;)

Oh, I have no such delusions about Microsoft listening to me. Just fun to think about what could be done.

Also: People still say "M$?" Even as its profits shrink? Huh.

The "$" doesn't stand for profit, it stands for their priorities. If good decisions for end users were their priority, their profits would be bigger and people would not be using "M$"... (Sort of a variation on "Penny wise, pound foolish." ...Maybe "Technically wise, user foolish." Is the lesson we need to learn from M$/Balimer.)

Way back in the dark ages I started out with Apple: got a 2+, a 2e, and finally a 2gs. Then Apple unceremoniously abandoned it's home user base and what I heard Apple say was "Mac or else". I chose "or else" and have never bought another Apple product since. Instead I switched to the PC and over the years have gone through all the iterations of MS PC OS'es except Millennium and Vista. To meet the requirements of Win7 I junked most of a perfectly serviceable machine. Now it seems, similar to Apple decades ago, I hear MS saying "touchscreen or else". I'm content to let history repeat itself and will choose "or else". Since Apple is not an option, I'll be content with my perfectly serviceable Win7 machine for as long as I'm able.

The one glaring exception is when you want to open a photo, video or audio file on the desktop, and Windows 8 boots you back to its Metro-style media players. You can change the default programs for these files, but that's a hassle. If I'm working on the desktop, I want to stay there.

and then everyone will [censored] about what a closed system Windows is, an d how you don't have "choices". For crying out loud!!!!! If you are on the desktop and don't want Metro at all, which you have made abundantly clear, you can change your default program for opening pictures along with any other file and effectively bypass Metro altogether. This isn't Apple folks. MS is giving you CHOICES!!! Have fun!

The start button has been moved to the Charms Bar and the Metro inspired menu is a fullscreen version of the Start Menu, what is people's problem with that. The Charms bar should keep the settings in the settings button but should include all the settings of the application instead of some, and tutorials i agree should be in place to help those that don't know how to use the new interface just yet. I agree however that multiple monitor support should be improved.
