Hi, Katherine Noyes, I think the 3-year support for the desktop is wrong. Both server and desktop versions are supported of up to 5 years. Please check.

That's true. In Katherine's defense, 12.04 is the first LTS version to do that. Historically, LTS versions have been 3 years on the desktop, 5 years on the server (as Katherine says). With 12.04, LTS is moving to 5 years on both the desktop and the server.

@allanregistos Absolutely right! Apologies! Five years on both. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases
Don't know how I forgot about that, but correction is on the way.
Many thanks for pointing out!
- Katherine.

Pardon complete ignorance...looking for a way around Windows (and Apple) so am trying to find an alternative to these; main use for music, video, photography, apps on lap top (and have android smartphone). This product talks mainly about business. Do I need this or other for a new lap top and desk top?

2 kalpa108: yes, ubuntu is highly recommended as reliable, performant and free alternative to windows and macos, also for home use. Only it makes sence to try live-CD/DVD at first, to make sure that all needed peripherals (like web-cams and printers) are supported.

Looking forward to trying 12.04 - Used Ubuntu since 10.04 but have been using Arch recently, the Unity interface, while awesome and pretty, is a bit too chunky resource-wise for me - I hope 12.04's Unity is a bit lighter/faster!

Oh and, the other day I discovered a NATIVE Linux game - An actual full-on MMORPG called Ryzom - Proving that high-end games can run on Linux (It's even in Ubuntu's software centre!). The only obstacle is the game developers being too lazy to make it work, and once they follow Ryzom and take that dive, that's another market Linux can penetrate.

As for your 'average computer user', my dad's been using Linux Mint since the release of 12 and hasn't once asked me for help, he claims its a million times easier than Windows ever was.

Who is left to persuade to switch? Unless you're a pro gamer you have no excuse, and even your time with that reason is limited.

Was using (*)buntu since intrepid. Unfortunately had to go back to win$oze only because of iTunes. Absolutely love Ubuntu but not being able to sync my iPhone psyched me. Wish there was an easy and native Ubuntu equivalent

I made the switch to 12.04 when I was prompted, I had no problems and looked forward to the test. However,
I was running 12.04 in VirtualBox and
had no way to expand to full-screen and hated the feel. I haven't figured out yet how to get full-screen like I had with 11.10.
I uninstalled and went back to my old version.

More than likely (and this is just a guess from the limited information I have), the version was fine. It was probably caused by the fact that that functionality comes from the virtual machine addons. That includes the video driver, which allows the VM to go full screen. With a new version of the OS, the drivers haven't been updated yet, or if they have been, you may have an older version of VirtualBox.

12.04 seems easier to use, with less resources being used to run unity (plus for performance). I do not understand though why I can no longer resume from suspend when I used to in all previous version, probably something to do with the graphic card driver apparently.
