I don't want to erase everything, I just want to overwrite the data that has already been deleted. Is there something that can do that?

I use HardDisk Scrubber. Perfect for wiping free space or wiping securely with multiple options.

this is terrible information, people with the right software programs can still retrieve data off of the usb flash drive. dban will leave remnants so it's not fullproof, you guys need to do more research

if you guys have a fullproof way either than breaking the usb flash drive i like to hear it but the usb has to be fully usable after whatever method you guys have

Darik's Boot and Nuke is by far the best method to securely erase the hard drive.
