"Wherever the ceiling is set for these new tablets, the budget manufacturers will aim for a yet lower-cost version of that,"
we could well see sub-$100 tablets :D (if the rumors of the Google tablet is true, of course)
Funny, I wonder where would the pure e-readers go when that happen? $40-50? :P

By then e-readers will be obsolete because people want devices that can do more than one thing. This is what consumers think when they purchase a device. If a e-readers drops down to $50 they would think for another $50 I can get a tablet and browse the web, watch movies, play games, and also use it as a e-reader. You can see that as smartphones, media players, television sets, and etc advance forward

RE: "One thing's for sure: As more companies move into lower-priced territory and duke it out for market share, it's the customers who will reap the rewards. After all, in a world where the same dollar seems to buy less with each passing year, getting a better tablet for a lower price is something anyone can appreciate."

Yeah, I personally can't wait for manufacturers to stop trying to chase Apple and instead engage in demolition derby style competition with each other in a race to the bottom.

Sounds like the netbook saga is about to repeat itself, wherein manufacturers search for the lowest feature set and most mediocre execution that consumers will still spend money on.

This is a great article, JR, and our TI team appreciated your detailed focus on the growth and potential around value tablets. As we continue to bring the OMAP processors to affordable tablets (such as the Kindle Fire, Barnes & Noble NOOK, Lenovo S2109 and A1-07 Idea Pad, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, and others ), it’s interesting to point out that a smartphone and tablet might be the same on the outside, but the way those products are strategized is completely night and day. With value tablets, our customers are looking for the most features that they can get into a device while maintaining a low price point and ensuring a low return rate, among other benefits. Across the globe, local tablet makers are also incentivized by governments to fully incubate and sustain tablets in their own country. It’s not just about delivering a successful product in these regions â€Â" it’s about providing tools for growth and prosperity. I am honored and inspired to help lead TI’s role in this process, and certainly looking forward to keeping in touch with you as more value-line, OMAP-processor-based tablets come to market. â€Â" Ron

I disagree about e readers, personally I can't read an LCD screen for more than an hour or so but e readers I can read for about 6 hours a day (about what I can do with a book). I think you are right about wanting a device that does it all as long as there isn't a limiting factor like reading LCDs, you get a tablet that can do e ink as well, e readers will all but disappear.
-I stand by what I write.

7 inch tablets are only good for reading ,but useless for pretty much everything else. For stuff like watching videos or surfing the web a screen size of 8 or more is better suited.

You know most of this stuff people DO NOT NEED! Most of this high tech junk people can really do without in their lives. A lot of folks buy this stuff, "play" with it for a short time, then get bored with it and lay it down. Waist of money in my opinion.

You'd think that people would smarten up after a while and stop being tricked into buying "affordable" junk.

I know I learned that lesson many years ago. Price should never be the primary consideration when evaluating a possible purchase.

I always pay good money for good products, without hesitation. And when I come across shareware that really helps me, I pay the developer.

That would be waste, not 'waist'

But i am more curious about the 9+ inch tab prices in the coming year what with win8 tabs also entering the fray and if ipad2 will continue to be produced after the next new ipad launches.

I honestly do not want a $200 "super ereader" tablet when I have a large GSII high end smart phone. What I need is a portable powerhouse that can replace my laptop for the majority of tasks aside from heavy MATLAB/Solidworks tasks. I'm still waiting for a good slate/"super tablet" preferably with:

Windows 8 (faster w/tab support than 7, better battery life)

Quality Digitizer (For better pen support)

Ivy Bridge (Better battery life, faster). ARM is a possibility depending on software support.

And a 1920x1200 screen as I prefer/need the larger workspace provided.

With the at least one USB 3.0/SD Reader and Bluetooth/Wifi.

Unlike most people that I have seen, I don't need a "toy" or a "gadget" with "apps". I need a tool with programs for work and college that gets the job done and efficiently.

I discovered the same thing when I recently picked up a Lumia 900: I no longer needed the Kindle Fire, as much as I liked that thing (I thought Amazon did a great job with it). I ended up selling the KF to a friend and I'm waiting for something like the ASUS Transformer with WinRT on it so I can sell/gift my netbook.
