If you installed a program into XP mode, you can only run it in XP mode. And that means you have to launch XP mode to run it.
However, most programs written for XP will run in Windows 7 without problems. If an older program does have problems in Win7, you can run it in Windows XP compatibility mode: Right-click the program file or a shortcut to the program on the Start menu, and select Properties. Click the Compatibility tab. Check Run this program in compatibility mode for and select one of the XP options from the pull-down menu. That should help in most cases.
But you may have a problem with 16-bit software. If a program is really old (pre-1995), it won't run on a 64-bit version of Windows. If you have a new PC, it's almost certainly running x64 version of Win7. For that, you'll need XP Mode.

The progams appear in the XP Mode App folder but you can send a shortcut to the desktop. Then the apps can run seemless except you will see the message about XP mode. So if you install when running in XP mode you wn't have to bring XP mode up to excute the program as long as you did create the shortcut.

Hi, orl.
Are you saying that there's a way to put a shortcut to an XP Mode-installed program onto the Windows 7 desktop? And have it work?
If that's what you mean, can you please explain how to it?
Thanks,
Lincoln

I like Parallels best, but there's no beating the VirtualBox price/license terms.
On the plus side, this software will run on any but the most gimped versions of Windoze, and of course OSX and Linux.

Yes when ever you install an application in XP mode it puts it in a folder all you have to do is drag it to your Windows 7 desktop. It does have to start XP mode the first time.
The term used to describe this is called seamless. So a google search of "running XP mode applications seamlessly in windows 7" should get a hit.

Thanks for the heads up. What threw me is that it doesn't work with programs already installed in XP, such as Outlook Express.
