Hi everyone,

My Toshiba Satellite A205-S4607 fan died recently and I purchased a brand new one which I installed immediately. Upon putting the laptop back together and turning it on, the BIOS continues to produce the high pitched squeal to notify me that the fan is not working before it cuts itself off.

I took the fan back out and hooked it up to a AA battery which powers the motor and the fan works properly so I know it is not an issue with the part.

I entered the bios to check if there were any options that govern the fan, but other than the built in CPU performance options, I don't see anything.

Anyone have any ideas?

Does the fan appear to be running when the PC is on? (with the high pitched error noise it's probably a bit hard to listen to it, but try putting your hand next to the air vent)

No. There is no air coming out, no visual response, and no aural response when the fan is plugged in to the motherboard and the laptop is turned on.

That's odd - BIOSes only detect whether or not there is a fan there and sometimes the speed it's running at, not whether or not it's the manufacturer fan. Are you sure it's connected securely? Have you tried removing the battery and unplugging it for a moment?

The fan is connected properly and I have removed the battery and unplugged the laptop several times.

Ok this is just a shot in the dark, but try resetting the BiOS by removing the CMOS battery ( There may be a Jumper on the motherbaord as well but not sure ).

Are you sure that the connectors for the 2 fans are the same, and the + and - terminals are the same? (remember, red=positive and black=ground/negative)

Does the old fan work from the aa battery? (I'm wondering if there's something going on with the motherboard's fan controller...)

No, the old fan does not work on the AA battery. I have been at the motherboard fan controller stage of troubleshooting since before I posted this thread.

As coastie mentioned, clearing the cmos might work (http://forums.techar...s/1183281-3.htm).

I desoldered the CMOS battery last night and resoldered it this morning. Upon booting, the fan does now work however the speaker is still making a high pitched squeal that will not go off.

I've checked the BIOS for an options but do not see any options for shutting off the noise which I believe is a cooling system failure notification.

In Windows, if you run a program like Speedfan or HWmonitor, what does it say your CPU temp is?

Looks like the fan stops again as soon as Windows begins to boot. I'd assume it's a hardware change conflict with Windows itself and it's going to need to be reinstalled or have a repair utility run (fat chance that'll work).

I believe the speaker problem is from heat damage to the speaker or the cable.

That's odd... the only thing I can think of - maybe the new fan needs a slightly higher voltage to start running (for instance, run a 12V fan at 6V and it might not spin at all), and as a result the system thinks it isn't running. Sometimes, at first, the fan runs at a higher speed, and then calms down - and maybe it's dropping the voltage too far for the new fan.

Ok. Lets go over some things. When you replaced the Fan / Heatsink assembly , what kind of thermal compound did you use and how much? The second part of that question is critical.

Coastie, keep in mind that some laptops use thermal pads, not paste. (for instance, this was the case with the CPU and GPU on a old Dell I dealt with)

I haven't been into the HP yet, so don't know what I'll find there. Most stock Intel CPU coolers come with pads, but you can clean them off and use TMC.
