I found republic wireless about a month ago, but its a low-cost voip/cellular hybrid phone with no contract and said to be the newest innovation.
I got my beta invite! I'm registered with wave L so it'll probably be the middle of the summer before I can get it, but I'm curious to see where they're gonna go with this idea they've got.

As it is, I feel like giving the middle finger to Verizon. They recently put in a $30 upgrade fee, they're the most expensive carrier out there, the Galaxy Nexus's updates are being held back by them (only Android 4.0.1, not 4.0.4?
). I've been thinking about getting a smartphone, but I'm definitely not sure that I'll be sticking with VZW. (too bad I still have nearly a year left on my contract)

I'm in an agreement with my cousin, she & her husband own the VZ account and I only have to pay for what I use ($10 for texting/line, $30 for the data) So $40 a month for an iPhone! Can't get any better than that
But that really is annoying, I want a provider that just works, no evil, no sneakiness, just great service with fun perks!
If you want cheap plans for real smartphones I highly recommend Virgin Mobile- http://www.virginmobileusa.com/

My family currently has 700 minutes shared across 5 dumbphones, so there's the base plan + $10/month per phone. $30/month per phone for data is not something I'm looking forward to, for sure.
Virgin Mobile's plans aren't bad, but I think I prefer tmobile prepaid's. There's a $30/month plan there that gives you 5GB data (full-speed anyway), 100 minutes voice, and unlimited texting. I don't care much about voice anyway.
