Hello everyone!

I just purchased a new laptop, an HP Pavilion g6. It came with the new Windows 7 OS, dual core, 4GBS Ram and 320GBS HDDR.

As some of you know I work with Photoshop and PSElements and I have to be able to copy and move pictures around, lots of times, every day. In my old lappy (Compaq Presario, with Vista Home Premium) I had the option to right-click on an image and I could use either one of those options.

However, I have looked everywhere in my new laptop and I cannot find any helpful answer. I've looked through the Help & Support thingy. I went to the Windows site and couldn't find any info there either (unless I was looking in the wrong page) I even went to the HP Support Forum and haven't had one single answer since I posted the thread. grrrrr

So these are my questions:

1 - Are there other options, like maybe "export image"? Where would I find that?

2 - Is there another way of achieving the same results?

I haven't been able to transfer my files from the old lappy to the HP one yet because of that... :( I really need to find out how to copy and/or move pictures around.

I'd really appreciate all your assistance, please.

Thank you! Have a great week!

Hi Adama, as a rule you can usually right click on the object and get a menu for that stuff. Don't know about Exporting, but if you have some on a memory card or flash drive, you can import them ( also direct from a camera.).

Hi Coastie!

Thanks for the message. Yes, you can right click on the image and get the menu stuff, however the options to "Copy to" and "Move to" do not appear on that menu.

I did try copying an image to one of my USB flash drives. Then, I connected it to my old lappy and couldn't even open it as it was only a Shortcut. Go figure...

Just find the pictures in explorer, and right-click, and click Copy. Then, go over to the flash drive, right-click, and click paste.

Hi sweetie!!

To add copy to-move to in the context menu of any OS or in your case Windows 7,
use this little tweak that I have been using since Windows XP :

Download Copy To / Move To Registry Tweak

Click on the link that I have provided and you will get a .rar file.
Unpack using WinRar or 7Zip or whatever you have to unpack
those files ( if you don't have WinRar or 7Zip, you can get them here:

WinRar : 64 Bit : http://download.cnet...contentBody;pop
(If this link isn't live then, copy and paste in your browser's address bar)

7Zip : 64 Bit : Download (click on the Download button to get the installer. No need to visit a website unless you want to)
http://www.7-zip.org/

and from the unpacked files, you'll see two .reg files
(registry files or tweaks).

Posted Image

Click on them by Left Click (no need for "Run as Administrator" as you won't get one in the right click context menu).

You will now get a UAC pop-up. click on Continue or Yes or Accept.

The next pop-up you "should" get (maybe not) is a Warning asking you if you want to install from an unknown source.
Click on Yes or Continue.

Posted Image

Once you've clicked on the Yes button, you will get a confirmation of the installation or Tweaked registry.

Posted Image

On this screen shot of the Warning , it says "from the "F" hard drive. That's mine as all of my downloads are
going to the second hard drive in my PC. Yours will most likely say the "C" Drive.

Once the Confirmation pop-up appears click on the "OK" button, You can now Right Click on Any file or

Posted Image

as many files as you like and can either Move or Copy them to any folder of any drive or Flash Drive on your PC.

Hope you will enjoy your new HP. It sounds like a good one.

See Ya!!

FLASHORN.

Hi, Adama.

Windows 7 has this ability, but it's hidden. Select the file or folder, then press and release the Alt key to bring up the Windows Explorer menu. Select Edit, then either Move to folder or Copy to folder.

You can add these options to the context menu (the menu that comes up when you click a file) with a Registry tweak. See http://www.techrepub...-accessible/744 for details.

Hi Brian,

Yeah, as I said in my original post, that's exactly what I did, but all I got was a "Shortcut" on my USB drive.

Hi Brian,

Yeah, as I said in my original post, that's exactly what I did, but all I got was a "Shortcut" on my USB drive.

And you're sure that you didn't click 'create shortcut' or anything like that?

If you want to transfer files from your old computer to the new computer, you might consider the Windows Easy Transfer utility:

http://windows.micro...s-easy-transfer

It will not transfer over programs, but will transfer over files and I believe some system (i.e. Windows) settings.

Hi Smax,

Long time no "see" you! :) Thanks for the link, when I got the laptop at BestBuy I also purchased an Easy Transfer Cable to transfer my stuff to the new lappy. Hopefully that will make it really easy. :D

I thought I'd share a couple of pics I took of my new HP. Sorry the first one is blurry, I was so excited to open the box that I could hardly breathe! LOL

It's a really nice taupe color (which I love) it only cost a cool $329... I saw it on QVC a few weeks ago and I think they wanted something like $700. for a similar one. :o

Anyway, thanks again for the great answers, guys. I haven't been able to check the links yet because I've been running around all day today, so I might have to wait until tomorrow. *big sigh* Knowing that you guys are here for me makes me feel much better. :D

Thank you!

It is fairly straight forward. You can use the Easy Transfer Cable and it should be fairly smooth. The link I provided is to download the application that you will need for the OLD computer, but it also has some links on the bottom of the page that provides some help/how-tos...including a link to a video.

FWIW, you can also do it across the network, but it will likely be easier for you to use the cable you got. I used it when my dad got a new computer, but I used the network for the transfer.

Nice. :D I have a 17" HP thanks to my Brother-in-Law. It needs a new Motherboard ( which I have ). Thing was some $1600+ new in July '07 ( It is a Dv9260nr ). I already have a 17" Gateway ( that my Mom uses ) as well as a 15.6" Gateway that I bought in Mid December, because I couldn't pass up the deal. :P

Hi Flashie!

Long time no see, my friend! :D Thank you for all the great info, as usual. I appreciate your attention to detail and I love how you provide pictures as how everything should look, that's an invaluable visual aid tool.

I already have the WinRar program, sometimes I have to download large files of images to use in my Photoshop work. I'm not sure what my harddrive letter is though... have to check up on that, it could be "C" like you said.

I've read the instructions a couple of times, everything looks fairly easy. It doesn't look like I would have to go into the Registry (which scares the beegeesus out of me.) LOL

I'm really loving my new lappy. The old one has 1.3GHz and this one has 2.0GHz so it is a faster machine.

Thanks again!

Hi Lincoln!

Thanks so much for the great info! I tried it earlier today and it works just like you said... EASY!
Hit alt and then Edit and there they are... yay! I practiced with a couple of pics and was able to copy them to another folder and also moved them too.

LOL  Now I don't know if I should just go for the easy thing or do the other one that Flashorn recommends - it looks pretty cool. Geez, sometimes I'm such a chicken when it comes to trying out new things.... :P :o

Thanks again!

Hi Smax,

I was reading through the link you gave me and found some very useful information - thank you!

I seem to remember that I have the Easy Transfer option in my old lappy and I thought that I wouldn't need the new download. But, the Windows page says people complained about transferring problems so they have revamped it and it's better now, with no hangups.

So, it looks like I will be downloading it soon, probably tomorrow, as today is already packed with stuff I have to do.

Thanks again!
