I went a much less expensive route to set up free phone service and downloaded the GVJack App to switch an expired magicJack phone adapter over to Google Voice for under 20 bucks.

The part I like the most is that my new phone is fully integrated with the Gmail contacts facility.

@RickCooper

Thanks for the tip on the GVJACK APP. I had a MajicJack sitting around I decided not to renew and was Googling for alternatives when I hit this article.

It took me about 2-3 minutes to setup this morning and I figured out how to set up my Google Voice account to make my GVJACK phone and mobile phone ring at the same time and switch a live call between the phones by dialing an *.

Pretty impressive and blows my old MajicJack service away...

Another feature: free long distance from your landline - If your Google Voice number is a local number, and you've got the voicemail set up on it, you can call it from your home phone....it will prompt you to "press 2" to dial a phone #....so, press 2, then dial any # in the USA....voila, free long distance.

On an Android phone, you can tell the phone to use GVoice for all calls. Then you GVoice phone number will show up on the phone of the person you're calling instead of your assigned number. This is useful if you want to use your GVoice number as your primary number -- callers will not get confused and when they call you back they will call your GVoice number.

Can I port an existing landline phone # to be used with google voice?? We want to give up the landline but we have a small business and some contacts that would continue to use the landline #

Unless you use the OBi100 or 110 rarely will you hear incoming calls ring; I have to say it has rung about 3 times this year. I do get the emails and transcription but it is inconvenient. I researched thoroughly and it is an issue for many.

At our company, we provide cell phones for all employees. Many of them don't want to carry two phones, so we encourage them to ditch their carrier, port their personal number to Google Voice, then use an app on their phone to make calls/texts via their work phone. When they need a personal line again, they can just port the number to another carrier.
