BTW: libreoffice.org/openoffice.org/scribus/inkscape are all FREE, open source projects. Free forever. No strings attached.

I just installed Scribus for fun, and a quick look at the UI. I would certainly prefer it over MSWord if I couldn't afford Adobe Illustrator. But you know what they say about 'free'... you get what you pay for. For me, using Scribus would tantamount to using iWeb, or even RapidWeaver, in place of Dreamweaver. You just can't match QuarkXPress, or even InDesign, with freebies like Scribus.

Another way in which Adobe kills similar products with is with their 'Classroom in a Book' series. Peachpit Press kills too, with their QuickStart guides. No one can match either of those two.

LibreOffice is free software with a familiar look and feel for MS Office users. It has a strong PDF export feature. It also has a large catalog of free templates and extensions. The home page is at libreoffice.org.

I attempted to do brochure design with LibreOffice and OO.org and both are sadly deficient and amateurish. Which was a major disappointment. MS Word was very usable pre-ribbon and less so now but still far superior to LO or OO. Yeah I know LO and OO are free but you can easily burn up the cost of MS Word in billable hours trying to do any more than just basic word processing. Others will disagree and it may be that they found better ways of working with LO and OO than I. Others will howl over this comment, simply because they want to howl and final product does not seem to be important to them.

I too fooled with Scribus and it was OK but still not robust enough for my needs. I've been a QuarkXPress user since pre version 1.0. Steep learning curve but very powerful. InDesign is pretty robust as well. I wish that PageMaker would show up as Open Source. That would be sweet.

Have you tried iBooks Author? How does it compare to Peachpit Press and "Classroom in a Book?"
