I am sill in the XP era and waiting to see if I can use my four year old HP DV 8000 (great computer) to migrate to Windows 8 or 9.
It has 1 GB RAM so upgrade mandatory there.

I am more concerned about my 1.66 processor Centrino Dual core processor and FSB being able to handle the new OS.

Wait for Windows 9? Don't want to do that.

I also like and use WMC on my XP and it works well.

What do you think? Go for W7 or W8?

Windows 8 will run better than Windows 7 on older hardware. Windows 8 has been slimmed down considerably.

Over-reacting is just the beginning. If you like Windows 7 and it satisfies your needs and Windows 8 does not offer any advantage to your HTPC then WHY WOULD YOU UPGRADE? If Window 8 will offer more functionality than Win7 the who would argue with a (reasonable) price increase? Would you be as angry if someone else gave you a bargain last week but this week decided to end the sale? You take it as as slap in the face because someone does not continue to give you something for free? LOOK AT THE PRICES OF MACS!!! In reality WMC was included in the price of Windows. Now they are seeking to sell Windows cheaper so that the people who do not use WMC don’t have to pay for it.

I gave up cable over 2 years ago and bought a computer just for my HDTV. With the money I saved on cable bills, in less than a year I paid for a state of the art computer. I agree with you 100%. I will not upgrade that computer as long as Media Center continues to do what it is doing now.

Typical Microsoft. Removing features instead of improving products. Wish they would remove WGA(Windows Genuine Advantage) instead.

Several years ago I acquired a legacy Hauppauge TV tuner card and only WMC on Win7 x86 recognizes it. I won't be upgrading to Win8 anytime soon.

This is just another reason why I will not upgrade for as long as I can possibly avoid it. I am staying with Windows 7 and I am not even thinking about upgrading beyond avoiding it.

NOW is the time to try UBUNTU ! specifically http://www.mythbuntu.org/ ...
It can do EVERYTHING that media center does & more.... for free.

You've heard of "Try before you buy"? ... Try this !, Before you EVER buy that !....
It's cool, works & you will learn something & can brag to everyone that you use Linux ! :D

Please let me know when mythbuntu supports cablecards. As far as I know, WMC is the ONLY application which works with them, at least with regards to "copy once" programing. I live in an area dominated by Time Warner and all stations other than local channels are copy protected.

Of course you are overreacting. You don't even know the price of either Win 8 or WMC. The justification is why should everyone have to pay for certain codecs for a relatively small user base. Theoretically MS can lower the overall cost of Win 8 for everyone and the people that use it can apply the savings to puchase it. Now reason to throw yourself over a cliff...

I want to be sure that I understood you correctly:

You are saying that the Microsoft will reduce the price of Windows 8 for users who don't want and never wanted WMC?

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL!!

Remember when people said that those flying with no checked luggage and just a carry-on would save money? Now look at what they are doing: adding enormous fees for carry-on! What's next: charging for oxygen consumed inside the cabin by attaching respiration monitoring devices??

Some people never learn.

That's what I've been saying the whole time. And guess what airlines? As a result, I haven't checked any luggage the past few times I've gone on flights, bringing bags that are the max size you can put overhead (big enough), and now there's more hassle in the cabin when everyone boards. Plus, they don't get to charge me extra fees! Ha! They loose...

Upgrade it to 2GB RAM (the max I think) and it should be able to run Windows 7 just fine. I know a guy with a dv6000t that he upgraded to Win7 from Vista (2GB RAM) and it runs nicely that way.

I agree WMC and a DVD player are important to me. I am going to buy a couple of copies of Windows 7 and keep them around for my next computer build operating systems. I know I can get a free DVD player download but that is just an extra haastle.

I'm another one who will NOT 'upgrade' to Windows 8 - maybe Windows 9 will be better, every alternate system seems to be a shambles, looks like 8 will continue the trend!

Along with the Internet, Media Centre is crucial to my computer requirements. They should be updating M.C. and including it, free, with windows 8.

I have one computer which has a dual over the air tuner recording 24/7 with WMC. Along with Netflix we don't miss cable. I was considering upgrading for the Storage Space enhancement but will reconsider after knowing the cost of the WMC plug-in.

WMC for Windows 8 is much improved, I know my media center will be upgraded permanently unless that cost is stupidly over the top.

No one can truly believe that the cost of Windows will go down. Starter packages will remain about the same they wouldn't have to capabilities anyhow, and top tier products will still fetch a premium. They want out of the media racquet, some media companies still think making it harder to do something will make it happen less. They tend to forget what happens once the cat’s outta the bag...

No you are write. I have a one box room, games/tv/video/computer all run off same machine and my flat screen television. I have the InfiniTV 4. I love my Media Center setup, though it is twitchy. I have to go through setup every time there is a system update. Microsoft is making a major mistake. WMC should be going through iterations of upgrades, instead they are letting it die. Just another sign of the weakening of MS, due to bad decisions.

WMC in Windows 8 is identical as in 7, except with the features they removed such as DVD playback. No new features will be added.

DVD playback has not been removed from WMC. Check your facts.
