Greetings!

I am using a 512meg RAM 1.6gig Thinkpad under XP Pro. After I used TuneUp Utilities, when I started up Dexpot 1.6, it triggers Microsoft Office 2000 Windows Installer which claims a feature you're trying to use is on a CD-ROM, Error 1706. I can click cancel to around six to eight of these alert boxes before it lets me get to Depot, but it's a pain and any new Dexpot setting I attempt triggers Windows Installer all over again. Depot's developer recommended re-installing MS Office, however I've no source CD, though I do have a full Maxium HD backup if that version's of any use. I'm willing to do any CLI surgery to disable this sudden bond between Dextop (hopefully the only program!) and Windows Installer.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you,

Jim from NYC

Nuke TuneUp Utilities - those kinds of programs are typically junk. (you might want to use the portable version)

Thanks for that! Only thing is, as this non-techie pours over the Revoun manual, I don't really know how to use it unless it's for uninstalling Windows Installer, but not only isn't Windows Installer on Revoun's menu (unless it's inside MS Office 2000), but can I reinstall MS Office 2000 off a Macrium backup instead of a original CD? Will the system allow it? I'm formerly from the Mac world where you don't have registry and product verification issues. I just want to be careful step by step till I make it to techie class like you guys!

Thanks!

I'm talking about nuking tuneup utilities. Windows Installer is built into Windows, and thus you can't get rid of it. Also, unfortunately, you can't just copy a program from a hard drive backup - there's the program files, PLUS all the registry stuff that it needs to run. As I mentioned in that PM, I'll send you an office 2000 ISO to use to reinstall it if needed.

You should start by uninstalling Dexpot 1.6. This program is still in beta which means it could be full of bugs and could mess up your machine. It is also written for Windows 7. You might try v.1.5 which supports XP, but before that, you should address those Windows installer issues, firstly by ensuring you are running Service Pack 3.
