Dell has made such an extreme effort to poorly copy Apple, that it actually bothers me. Would would want to be seen hauling around an Apple knock-off? I don't. The bright side with Lenovo, and Alienware, is that you get machines that are very much like Apple in that they have their own distinct style. There is no guesswork with my W520 - nor my X100e. Even their IdeaPad line maintains a clear and distinct brand. Is it really that hard to ask Dell to do the same?

Speaking as someone with absolutely no sense of aesthetic, I like the XPS 13 because it's thin (meaning it doesn't weigh too much in my backpack), and I don't have to pay the apple premium on top of needing to buy a copy of windows to install it on an air. OSX is great for some things like publishing and making music, but I find word processing, spreadsheets, and programming are just easier on a windows machine.

Agree Jim. Another company that used to make high end PCs and was very distinct as well as expensive, was VooDoo. Last I heard they were bought out by HP and I guess eventually closed. That is a shame, because they really nice high end units and offered more options and horsepower than Alienware. Jim do you know any information about the current Alienware products? I know that Dell bought them a few years ago and that some of the customization options are now gone (like different case colors); just curious if the build quality is still there.

My brother owns a 2nd generation M17x as I recall. He has had it now for a couple years in the Army, and it has survived 1 tour in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan. It also has a completely metal BODY - not just frame. Is it aluminum? Nope. Almost feels like steel, though I imagine it is most likely magnesium alloy. The keyboard on it is very high quality, though certainly not up to par with a Lenovo keyboard - though Lenovo does set that bar extremely high. The display was bright, and crisp, though doesn't have the color range of a true high quality display.

Overall, I would say it was a very high quality machine overall, but falling short of the "holy grail" in the display, and weight. Truth is, if the W520 hadn't done me as well as it has, I would have gone Alienware myself, nearly did it anyway after getting my hands on his for a few hours.

The world is a large place with lots of different people, driven by different things.
Myself, I'm a power user, I want fast running, lots of pixels and the ability to multi-task several applications at once.
I couldn't care less about how it looks.
I do think it's annoying when manufacturers clearly are trying to make a knock-off of another manufacturers design though.

Bought this problematic, and it is not ready for prime time, because:
It does not support hibernation.
The Cypress trackpad is horrible. Dell needs to replace this poor hardware with a better one, considering the high price.
Many keyboard buttons are now combined, forcing user to use both hands along with Fn key instead of just a finger.
Short battery life.
Screen does not open too much past vertical, making viewing while standing impossible.
Defrag is scheduled in Windows even tho this model comes with an SSD, a big mistake.
Battery is built-in, not user replaceable.
Do not recommend this poor model, look for another model.
