Could you point me to the location of this Wal-Mart special? I can't find it anywhere.

Buy one off craigslist for SUPER cheap, just make sure you are buying from someone who like "used it twice" and haven't touched it since and it will be like new. I see slims all the time for around $100 for 4gb and $150 for the 250gb model, you'll usually score an extra controller, games and accessories too.

I think this is a good move for MS. Yes, you end up paying more than if you buy everything up front, but this model has worked well for cell phone companies, because it allows people to effectively take out a small loan without a serious credit investigation. Also, it effectively takes the prospect of paying additional money for xbox live (which parents can be loath to do), and actually making xbox live reduce your initial amount of money spent, which i'm sure will make holiday shoppers happy. if MS introduces their next console with this model, there will be virtually no one who will not buy it due to unaffordability.

OK, I got my XBOX 360 250GB HDD and no XBOX live of any kind. I don't like playing with others and am not interested of any kind of "social" activity while I play. That doesn't mean this is a bad pricing model for everyone, specially kids that will find easy to buy the console for mere US$99 and paying 15 a month for XBOX Live service that they would buy anyway... and US$15 is not too much, or is it? Yes, I'll stay away of course, and will buy the next console when it comes out, at full price, no strings attached.

It's not a good deal for anyone with basic math skills.

Tell that to the millions of people who rent worthless PCs from Rent-A-Center. The model OBVIOUSLY works. This is main reason I won't buy an Android phone. By the time the product gets to me, it's already on it's way out of being both cutting edge and OS wise because I know google will release another update that my phone can't handle in 6 months. Cell phones depreciate quicker than a car honesty.

You at least know that your $99 console will have support until at least 2015, the 10 year mark of the consoles lifecycle. 3 th isn't bad.

People will buy this, kids will buy it for themselves. Especially since this is a kinect bundle which is geared towards kids to begin with.

You know what most craigslist consoles don't have? A warranty. That SUPER cheap console is awesome... until the power cord gets busted or some other unsightly thing happens and you have to pay $50+ on a replacement part.

Xbox live is only $60 per year here in Canada. A much better deal.

I will be waiting for the new Xbox, unless it comes with DRM. Then I'm not buying it.

It's not just math. It's called Time Value of Money. The money you have now is more valuable than the money you will pay in the future.

I'm thinking that they're getting us ready for their new business model slated for the next Xbox, where you need Internet access to validate ownership and you cannot play used games from others. This contract model fits nicely into that, just as it does with cell phones; cell phones validate your account continually, preventing you from using other used phones with your account.

"With a new console on the way, do you really want to be tied to a soon-to-be obsolete console?" How so, Ed? Are you suggesting that the new Xbox won't have Xbox Live?

Moral of the story here: think before you put your foot in your mouth.

Xbox Live is NOT $5 a month, it's $10, that's $240 over 2 years, not $120, so even at the cheapest deal you cite, which is the Walmart deal for $229, which incidentally is non-existent if you search their website (but why let facts and research get in the way of your opinion, right?), that's $469 for the whole deal and Live over two years. With MS's deal it's $459 with Live over 2 years. Now let's consider that your Walmart deal doesn't actually exists. Then the total package with the Xbox at $299 + $240 for Live is $539. That's a savings of $80. "Simple math" as some of your supporters have commented. Please do a little more impartial research before you decide to editorialize.

I don't know what the big deal is? For what it would cost you to do this 2 year deal you could buy a mid range PC that will play most games. And have it for 4 to 6 years.

It can be upgraded as time go's on to if a persons wants. Parts are fairly cheap, don't need a contract, and there are thousands of games for them. Both offline and online. And they won't brick it with and update either. You also get a decent warranty with it.

You already would need a net provider to go online anyway, so this saves the extra monthly fee to Microsoft. Plus games look much better and are easy for anyone to play. and they have controllers for them to if you want those instead of a keyboard and mouse.

Now on the other hand we do have a Xbox. It doesn't go online and we have no fee's for it to be used.

It's for when the Grand kids come to visit. And they give it Hours of play time. We paid thirty dollars for it online and it had a crate of games that came with it, along with a mess of controllers.

It just sets in the living room when they aren't here, the Mrs and I play on the PC's. Our Kids all play on the PC to, they prefer the better graphic's and sound that the PC has.
