Phoenix is the fifth larges city in the United States. Why weren't any tests done here?

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'" -- Isaac Asimov

You have to include backhaul link to cellsite as well in your "number of variables" impacting the variability between sites in same town on same network. Super job gals and guys!

Does the type of phone and software generation have an impact? They gave you the best phones, and it would be interesting to see if there is variability amongst devices on the same network. Lastly, would love to see how voice-rec (siri, droid) performance as a 3rd real-world application/measure, since that requires a fairly clean and consistent signal.

In a city, at least for now, there is always a land-line phone if you need it. The real place for cell phones and their data capabilities is when you're traveling. How about data speeds on I-80 between Des Moines and Omaha, or I-90 between the Twin Cities and Fargo? How's the coverage in central Arkansas or the Mojave Desert? That would actually be a useful article. Nobody lives in those big cities anymore - it's too crowded.

The FCC produces a coverage map; a link is after this note. Read and weep! From personal experience, I'd say 3G coverage/consistency in most urban/suburban coverage gets graded a "B", with a lot of defaulting to 2G and wifi during congestion periods or poor coverage (inbuilding and outdoors) areas. The FCC map indicates very little 3G coverage in rural and outside urban areas in tertiary markets. Lot's of 2G or no coverage. That's an "F" in my book. 4G? Maybe a decade away, although Verizon is trying to work with ILECs to use as a wireline replacement. We need that and other solutions! http://tiles.mapbox....s-oct-2011-data

One last thing. You probably could have done a wifi speed test at each location to compare to 3 and 4G. Difference would have been worth noting (especially upstream for large file transfer and 2-way video; oh yeah, another app!), especially as most phones have single stream n radios capable of 30mbs. Always next time. Good job again!

Where is Phoenix in your cities list? It is the 5th or 6th largest city in the USA. How can you ignore such a market? Intel is building their largest 22 nm factory in theis area. This is now a techie city.

do you realize how contradictory that single statement is?

I wonder if you've heard of "tongue in cheek"?

I think it was a joke - Yogi Berra would be proud!

Yogi might also say, "It's all the data you can use, until you use it up." Referring to the data-capped "unlimited" service that can cripple even the coolest new smartphone. . . and your wallet.

Good point about flyover country, sometimes you can't even get 3G.

To Whom It May Concern,

I have been using an iPhone 4 with Att Wireless for the last 22 month. Nothing but trouble, from day one. Att Wireless has been dropping 50% of my calls, or maybe even more. Imagine the constant worry and aggravation of so many dropped calls! Over the course of the contract I have attempted to have the issue resolved with both Apple and Att Wireless. Apple has replaced my device with a brand new one and Att’s solution was to change my sim card. Neither solution worked; in fact the problem has gotten worst over time. My local Apple store where I purchased the phone refuses to replace it saying the problem lies with the service. Att refuses to accept the problem saying it’s a hardware issue and sending me back to Apple. See I am a customer a human being stuck in a contract between this two conglomerates whose faulty
product cost Americans billions of dollars per year.  Last two years I have had to leave my office and walk outside in order to talk on the Att Wireless phone. Sounds like I live in at the edge of the universe well, No! I live in Center City Philadelphia just 2 blocks from City Hall. If Att Wireless doesn’t have good coverage here where does it cover? Att Wireless was charging $138 per month on the unlimited everything plan which over the 24 month contract is well over $3000. Transferred to Tmobile on a prepaid unlimited everything plan for just $60 per month. Now I am surfing at 4g instead of 3g, I speed tested the Tmobile phone at 4-5 Mbps which is much faster than speeds the Iphone 4 3g offers. Best of all I can now talk on the phone without having to walk outside my office and without the constant worry of dropped calls. Still thinking about Att wireless? Save yourself a lot of money and a lot of aggravation and stay away from the horrible service of Att Wireless.

Professionally I am an Internet Marketing expert so I have created this webpage which I am advertising with the Facebook Ad Network in order to promote my horrible experience with Att Wireless. Facebook has targeting options and have set mine to target both Facebook users who are current Att customers as well as anyone who has ‘Liked’ Att Wireless on the Facebook network. I have also moved one of my Filipino outsourced worker from her current task to doing nothing but copying and pasting my story to every review site on the web. We are up to 42 reviews and this is after only one day. I will continue to have my agent review Att Wireless until a resolution is reached. My Facebook ads have displayed 700 hundred times, with 9 clicks to the website. The Facebook ad is attached.

My requested resolution is to receive every penny I had ever paid to Att Wirless over the last 22 Month as well as a sincere apology from a senior manager for my troubles. I can be reached at disgruntledattclient@yahoo.com.

I don't believe the Verizon 4g numbers in this report. With my Galaxy Nexus, in Dallas I was getting about 30-40 Mbps, and in LA I get about 20 Mbps downloads.

No you weren't.

I have to say I'm doubtful of the diligence of the researcher they sent to Boston: several test sites show EXACTLY THE SAME data which is, ahem, *unlikely*

Next time you're in Chicago, how about you test somewhere useful like, oh, I don't know, the Central Business District? Why on earth were you only testing out in the neighborhoods? The Loop has half a million people every weekday, and 90%+ of them use smartphones and might actually find your test useful. The people in McKinley Park? In Lawndale? In Bronzeville? They like fast speeds too, I'm sure, but all those areas added together still have fewer smartphones in use than the Loop. Next time you come to Chicago, please, for the love of all things holy, how about actually doing your tests where people use their phones?

Speedtest(s) are fickle in that you need to choose a different one for each location to some extent.

The only real test that should be done for accurate speed in official testing is choosing a large usenet service and downloading large files with at least 8 connections

This will tell you your exact top sustained speeds better than anything else on earth.

How does T-Mobile have double the speed on 3G in comparison to 4G in some areas?

I think you have some great results however I think the test is somewhat innaccurate if your trying to sample the "nation" you have not sampled in any of the fly over states. Why is that?
