I really MS hate! why is everyone so down on Microsoft? There software is top draw and they are really inovating at the moment. Just think how the world would be without them? Linux rocks but its not for the avarage user (I tried giving my wife ubuntu and she actually refused to use a computer and got a tablet). You could argue then that there is Apple but in that world we would all be clones with Apple telling us this is how you do things and paying through your teeth for there lock down (just compare say the price of memory for a pc to a mac). MS makes the best software and it still keeps competition alive and so prices down. Everyone thinks MS is expensive but ask yourself to who? Students get there software for free for example and if your company uses open license your staff can pick up office for £10, and thats only the people who actually pay for it. Then on top of that they give us IT pros things like AD and Group Policy, SQL and exchange.

It's probably a fine phone OS, but I don't see MS as innovators- maybe they are improvers, but certainly not innovators anymore.

"For the moment, however, no matter how you slice it, nobody is buying Windows Phone in the United States even with devices such as the Nokia Lumia 900" -- PCWorld needs to make research and keeping up with current events mandatory for its writers. I have a Lumia 900, my wife has one, my daughter wants one. Nokia is having a tough time keeping up with demand and making deliveries worldwide. By the way, see my post on another PCWorld article released today:

Really Windows Phone 7 is a rip off of iOS, Android RIM or Symbian, really?

I had a Windows Mobile phone a few years ago and was unimpressed. I have Windows 7 PCs at home and have always had a Microsoft desktop. I just don't want a Microsoft phone, period. I had a Nokia Symbian and was happy with it and now have an Android ICS phone and love it. Why is this a big deal?

Microsoft is sending conflicting messages to the marketplace. It is in the smartphone/tablet business OR the laptop/desktop business? With their, I think, foolish attempt at making one OS for both platforms--no wonder people are confused. Confusion breed the fear that one could end up with a "losing" OS--as in RCA's mainframe computers, SONY's Betamax, DEC's minicomputers, etc., etc.

I think WP7 is going to settle into a comfortable 3rd place. Good for Microsoft.

Who hired this idiot!

Lumia sold out for a while and they can't keep it on the shelf. VZW/Sprint made statements that they are hot on WM 8. Verizon is testing WM 8 on their servers. Why don't you research before you write something. This article was true..... like 3 months ago! By 4Q they will be selling 1M handsets a week---and that's just a start.

There are approximately 3 million iPhones being sold per week currently. Microsoft also has a lot of catching up to do as they are severely late to the market. There are also more Android phones (collectively) being sold per week than iPhones. So, Microsoft will be lucky to hang in there as a solid 3rd place. It all depends on how much money they're willing to pour into this machine until it seems to be senseless.

Hands down... it's the ugliest ui I've ever seen! I'd take a Win 3.1 ui over this one any day! I'll stay where I'm at!

Winner of the most unintentionally ironic comment of the day. Well done, good sir.

I agree. You really prefer Win 3.1? If you're going that low, might as well go DOS 6.22.

Wow, another of many absurd articles predicting gloom and doom and using outdated data.

First quarter results? First three months share? Hello, the first really great WP7 phone just came out at the beginning of the second quarter and is selling like crazy, at least in the US. Duh!

I had to call my local AT&T store several times to find out when they had some in stock so I could upgrade. I finally caught them when some had arrived within the hour before my call. When I hurried over to get one, three customers were buying at the same time (including me). That shipment probably didn't cover the rest of the day.

Let's see second quarter numbers to know the real story.

BTW, the Lumia 900 is by far the best phone I've owned or used.

I took the windows challenge and traded an old blackberry for a HTC Titan. I also use a Galaxy Note as my daily driver, but over the weekend I used the Titan to test out Windows. Overall, I would say the OS is smooth but has a lot of growing up to do. What I liked was that it was smooth, the tiles looked different in a good way, and Bing integration had some cool features(like visual text translations using the camera).

Now here are things that really need to be worked on. There's no good Gtalk client. I tried a few, including IM+ but it was horrible and unreliable. Also, the wifi goes to sleep whenever the screen is off for more than 30 seconds. This bothers me cause it eats up cell data and also I rely on wifi for a more consistent internet connection(for things such as gmail and push email). The battery and notification bar at the top also has no option to be always showing. That's annoying. Lastly and most obviously, there's a huge lack of apps.

With only 1.7% of the smartphone market :o attributed to ALL Windows Phone 7 phones (not just the Lumia), you really can't say that Microsoft's mobile OS is doing very well at all. <_<

I switched and I LOVE my Windows phone. I used to be an Iphone user and I dont miss it. Honestly all you hear is bad news about Nokia and the Windows Challenge. 1)MS is giving you a FREE phone without a contact when has ATT,VZ or Sprint done something like? 2)Nokia's doing their best. hey used to make best phone out there "hands down". It takes time to come back. Cut them some slack. Say some good things so consumers can give it a try. No will if the media continues to be on " HATE! ".

For the records, in my family there used to be 4 Iphone users 2 BB users and 2 Droid. the new count is 1 iphone, 3 Win Phone 3 Droid and still 1 BB... Those with Win Phone are satified to the point that have acquired new Win Phone. I really don't get the NPD Group and how they put their numbers together.

A.) Nobody believes M$. They've deceived end-users with vastly exaggerated advertising too many times.

B.) Nobody wants a phone that works like their Windows computer, because of the consistently bad experiences they've had over the past years.

C.) Windows 8 is designed around the Metro UI of this about-to-sink smartphone!

I think m$ is on the verge of a long-overdue comeuppance.

I am not here to bash Windows Phone 7 because it is slick and seems to be more responsive than iOS and Android. That said, the Lumia selling out and AT&T not being able to keep it off the shelves might be a bit of a ruse because AT&T is not necessarily stocking many in their stores to begin with.

I've been using and supporting M$ products since DOS 3.3. You obviously work for M$, because only an entry-level marketing geek (or a naive teenager) could make those kinds of statements about M$ products. (Which makes you yet *another* reason to hate M$.)

Windows Phone Smokes..
..But No One Wants It!!

You know WHY?

Because it's DUUUUUUUUUUUULL ! !

Faster speeds CANNOT SAVE WP7 or 8..

..as long it looks it was designed
in MS Paint with the square tool!!

as long as WP7 LOOKS LIKE
it's in SAFE MODE..

..people will NOT buy it ! !

1 color squares?

SQUARES ! ! ?

Who would want to buy WP7 or 8 to stare at
HUGE ONE-COLOR Squares all day long?

No matter how "LIVE" those squares are.. people don’t care.

People want a cell phone that is nice to look at..

WP7's user interface is so dull to look at..
Even Windows 95 in SAFE MODE looks better.

Hey, even the old Windows Mobile 6.5 looks better ! ! ! !

Just this one and only this one alone
is a TOTAL MAJOR TURN OFF from WP7..

I dare you to take a look and compare..

..which phone UI looks better:

Dear Microsoft..

Your are competing against
Apple and Android..

..not against MS DOS!!

From a Windows 7 Fanatic.

This is the worst post I've read all week. No substance to your complaints, other than I don't like how it looks. What about how well it works, never crashes, is fast, easy to use unlike a BB, and easier to use than a Droid unless you are a complete geek. I don't like your blue car, therefore it is lousy...it should be red or green. That's the substance of your post loser.

Ian Paulis an idiot! Ask him what phone he uses and then you get the motivation behind his assessment. The Lumia 900 is taking the smarthpones up another level in simplicity and efficiency. Give it a little more time for "word of mouth" to get around. Momentum doesn't happen over night but I'm a firm believer and I've owned every damm iPhone that was ever made...they are good but they aren't as good as the Lumia 900. Fact!
