Keeping Laptop And Desktop Files Up To Date. How do you keep your latest file versions on your desktop?

I have both desktop and laptop and I do an equal amount of work on both. I'm afraid I've duplicated many files by working on the laptop while I have the same file on the desktop.
They are both running Windows XP.
What I want to do is to backup the laptop files onto the desktop (and vice versa) so I end up with the latest version of these files on both machines so that I can use either machine and always be working on the latest version of the file. What I don't (or can't) do is remember all of the files that I've done this to, so I'm thinking that there might be a program out there (or maybe even a utility in Windows)that can help me.
Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Good idea and there may be others with even more storage that could be accessed by both computers. I haven't looked though.
