Since I'm guessing that anyone who buys a new PC just before Windows 8 comes out is probably doing it to avoid the new operating system, I don't think that this will be much of a problem.

I've noticed that PC prices have been dropping and I was about to take the plunge on a high performance PC but not after having read this article. Whether or not 8 will offer any new functionality worth waiting for is very subjective but since Microsoft has a policy of planned obsolescence it would seem prudent to wait for the new system.

You're right. People buying laptop/desktop type PCs will be buying with Windows-7 being installed. Tablet and smartphone buyers would be expecting the touch-n-scratch Windows-8. So, who cares about whatever inducement Microsoft dangles out there to lure people into Windows-8.

If I had enough money right now to drop on a new PC (Mother's Day gift, if you were asking), I'd stick with Windows 7 for years. I've already tried Windows 8 from the Consumer Preview and didn't like it 5 minutes later.

how soon every one has forgotten about the Windows Vista release .
so many complaints that Microsoft and many various PC manufacturers offered
customers FREE conversions to Windows XP -SP3 .

i was one of the millions who skipped Vista and went to Windows 7 Ultimate .
never have regretted my decision .

for the last few months , i have been testing the
Windows 8 Consumer Preview on a new Dell XPS 8300 , i7-2600 cpu .

i used Casper 7 to clone the factory Windows 7 drive .
and then i went to Microsoft's download site ,
and i upgraded to Windows 8 on my clone drive .

both 1-TB drives are identical , except for one having the
Windows 8 preview installed .

so far i have not been able to find even one reason to upgrade a
desktop to Windows 8 ?

after the preview period ends , ... even if Microsoft lets us keep
the preview for FREE ??

i don't think i will use it !!
i will convert the drive back to Windows 7 .

if Microsoft would offer a patch to turn off the Metro interface
then i would test 8 some more .

but the latest word from Microsoft is that Metro is here to stay .
so for desktop users , i feel that 8 is DEAD on arrival .

I too tested the preview consumer release on an Aspire 1 Netbook, on a spare Win7 drive swapped into it. The good, is that Win8 recognised most of the netbook's hardware, and found most programs compatible.
The bad covers most of the posts, and after several weeks of not being to effectively navigate to programs, or figure out easy keyboard commands, I put the original Win7 back in and will not be looking forward to the new OS. I repair computers, and am a Microsoft Partner, and have nothing good to say about the OS past the install.

I would not use the horrible and abysmal Windows 8 if Microsoft paid me.
Microsoft... you can shove your piece of garbage Windows 8 where the sun does not shine.
That is how I feel about Microsoft and Windows 8.

Why I hate Windows 8 and will never use it:
It wastes my time. I use a PC to be productive and allow me to do what I want to do, easily and speedily.
Windows 8 is so poorly and stupidly designed that it is always in the way of what I want to do. That is not what a good, smart and intuitive OS should do.
Windows 8 is dead before it is born, and a big shame on Microsoft for this huge debacle.
I will anxiously wait for the upcoming Windows 7 SP2.

Actually, they are being very smart: they are convincing XP and Vista users to go buy Win 7.

If you try one with a mouse, keyboard, touch sreen combo you will change your mind. That's what Microsoft is shooting for.

Windows 8 is going to be a huge failure.
