This refers to a HP Compaq Presario 115DX Notebook. A two year warranty runs about $117, a three year runs about $217. Some versions would feature accident coverage.

Does anyone have any familiarity about the "hooks and catches" with the HP warranties? How much would it cost to buy a new item of this laptop?

I usually don't mess with the extended warrantys. Waste of money in my opinion. As for HP. I have a Dv9260nr Laptop sitting here wiating for me to replace the motherboard. From what I've been told it would be the second replacement. :P If it wasn't such a nice laptop, I probably wouldn't be wasting my time as I already have two, plus two desktops. I guess those extended warranties are up to the individual as to whether they want to spend the money. As to the hoops you may have jump through, I'm sure there at least some as well as some catch 22's built in.

I wouldn't bother with it. Typically, if anything, the machine will fail within the first year or so. Also, it looks like that machine was only about $300 to start with - if it were to fail 3 years later, for instance, the amount you could've spent on the warranty would get you a good chunk of the way toward a brand new, faster laptop.

Personally, I don't usually do extended warranties.

The potential exception is if it includes "accident coverage" and it is a "mobile device". If you are prone to being kind of rough with your stuff, then it might be worth getting accidental coverage.
