So once more we have a new toy in house. This time for my wife. I have been allowed to tinker simply so I have a bit of time to see what I think of it.

For mothers day/appreciate-your-wife-with-whatever-she-desires day :D she found herself enjoying a new Lenovo k1 tablet. i must say this thing is a mixed bag.
First the positive notes.

1: It works. :)
2. The display is surprisingly decent. After thinking about the resolution of Apples new display, I was concerned with how the relatively low resolution would appear. To be honest, a freaking hd screen inn10" is plenty. Movies are sharp and clear, and photos look relatively natural.
3. This sucker is quick. For nearly every use I can come up with, it does the job in s timely manner, which is all I ask.
4. Games are freaking amazing in here. Dungeon defenders was the ultimate test for me. The game is based on the UT3 engine, and runs like a champ on here. Lenovo included Galaxynon Fire 2 and NFS Shift. Both work as expected. Both also include graphics far beyond expected. The Nvidia Tegra 2 really does earn its keep.
5. Book reading has been much nicer on here than I would have ever expected. This of course is due to they naysayers of the world claiming the iPad aspect rationwas the best for that purpose. I beg to differ.

Now the not so hot.
1. As expected this screen reflects every wanna be light source on the western hemisphere. Dead serious, it is a reflextion magnet. That said, the display is bright enough that you can still easily see past most of it. With this, though, you get the finger prints as well. In just a few hours the screen was packed with prints, and smudges.
2. Typing is a pain. The keyboard is about the right size, and the accuracy is ok at best. This is currently being typed up on the tablet so I can force myself to actually give it an honest try. And right now, I hate it.
3. Movies... I know I mentioned them upntop as looking great. I suppose that should have been conditional. You see, this thing does wonderfuly with .x264 +mp3 encoded 720p material or lighter. Anything else, prepare for a fight. You might convice it to work, but it wont be pretty. 1080p content is not pluasible at all. No matter what Lenovo claims.
4. The main camera. Why on earth isnit even there? This is, without a doubt, the most awkward camera to use, and it doesn't even work that well. Top it off, we find ourselves adjusting how we hold the device to try and avoid the lense. It just doesn't seem well thought out.

Barttery life so far has been all freaking day, even with us tinkering and playing with crap we normally wouldn't. So very good job there Lenovo.

Build quality is both hit and miss.the glass seems decent enough with solid workmaship there. The aluminum frame alsomquite solid, though with mild, yet obvious, misallignment. The back is a textured plastic' which helps maintain a solid grip, but has far too much flex. I am forced to worry about the machines long term survival.

All in all... a terrific way to spend $250. Lets hope the wife remains happy for a while.

Congratulations on the K1, please keep reporting on your experience.

Just as a note of clarification, many of us who prefer the 3:4 (portrait) aspect ratio do so, not necessarily because it's better for reading books and magazines (after all paperback books are closer to 10:16 than 3:4), but because the 3:4 format more nearly reflects the documents that most of us use and deal with every day. I also prefer it for Keynote (Powerpoint) presentations as it's my opinion that you can convey more in the 4:3 format in a more cohesive way than in the 16:10 format. Speaking for myself and others that I know (I'm pretty mature and know a bunch of folks in the design field) we are not "naysayers" but are expressing a preference.

I'll appreciate reading about your wife's reaction and use of the tablet and will appreciate your insights as well.

I wasn't speaking against everyone, just the ones who attempt to make the sweeping generalization that 4:3 is the only ideal way to read.

I will follow up after my wife gets plenty of time with it. I want her long term answers more than short term. Right now, she loves it. But I think it is mostly "new toy love" than anything.

Wait, you have a smartphone right? How do you deal with that - anti-glare screen protector? To be honest, a touchscreen is the one place where I really don't want a glossy display (because it feels annoying on your fingers and it can get smudged). I don't really mind it otherwise.

The smartphone is small enough that I don't notice it. That and the fact that it doesn't seem as reflective.
