a 4.6 inch screen on the iphone 5?

Now THAT would be a reason to upgrade.

Not. big. enough.

Size matters. I have no trouble at all using a 4.3 inch screen with one hand.

Apple is really losing the edge.

An iPhone 5 with a 4.6" retina display would be the one to beat this year. Nothing else will come close, even samsung's best offerings this year.

It's not the highest pixel density phone display, it's already being beaten by 4.3inch 720p displays so that's just not true anymore. Also I welcome the change, one handed operation isn't that significant to me personally compared with more real estate, a better keyboard and gorgeous movie watching. I highly doubt that Apple could build a retina-resolution display right now though, unless it decides it wants 1080p which would truly be a feat.

4.3 - 4.5 is the bread and butter size in my opinion. Anything closer to 5 is starting to take up to much pocket space.

Kudos to Daniel Ionescu for the tone and backgrounding of this story. I'm always grateful for an article that doesn't find it's roots in DigiTimes

Selling, or announced?

Either. The HTC Rezound has a higher pixel density, but I don't know if it's sold around the world or only in the U.S.

The proof is in the ppi -- the number of pixels per inch, also known as pixel density. We'll calculate it out here: with a resolution of 1280 x 720 on a 4.3-inch screen, the Rezound offers a mind-boggling 342ppi. From what we can tell, it tops the charts -- the Retina Display found on the iPhone 4 and 4S is no longer tied for first with the LG Optimus LTE. And not only does the Rezound beat the iPhone's display soundly, it does so with a larger screen size. http://www.engadget....rezound-review/

The way things are going, by the time the next iPhone is available, it might be the only phone I can get with a screen size close to 4". I really cannot stand the large phone screen sizes, and want to stay right around 4" for a phone. Something in the LOW 4" would be O.K., but I think the size of my DInc2 is just about perfect.

Ah—I knew the Rezound was one, but my brief look made me think it wasn't out yet. Turns out I'd been redirected to the UK pages. Thanks.

It's only available from VZW. It is a CDMA/LTE only device. However it is known to be sold under other names like HTC Vigor and Droid Incredible 2.
The Incredible and Thunderbolt and many others in that same family are based off the original HTC Desire.

I wished LG made nice looking phones. Their phones look so much like Moto's devices....ugly to me. The Desire family of devices are always very slim, very light and the recent ones have very beautiful larger screens. For me, after finally getting a device with AMOLED, I prefer not to go back to blacklite LCD's.
