Hey guys so i'm kinda new to the whole graphics card installation thing. These are the specs for my computer. Any suggestions for a graphics card? A friend of mine suggested this one.
http://www.circuitci...ltCjCVqHCjCdwwp But it was pretty expensive when it was in stock. Around $320-ish. Anyone have any cheaper alternatives that would be a decent match? I decided i wanted to start using my Computer for more gaming since im getting a little bored with my ps3. Any suggestions would be awesome! I'm a little paranoid about the installation as well but i'll find a away to sort it all out if it means i can get a new card! :D

Thanks!
Mia :)

Hi and welcome to the forums. Before upgrading your card, you will need to upgrade the powersupply. 250w just isn't going to do it with the cards these days. I don't know what kind of budget you have to work with, but it would be helpful.

Power Supply: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817139026 - $44.99

Video Card: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814130625 - $134.99

Total : $179.98

There is that Antec VP 450. It is a few bucks cheaper, and delivers the same power... Just tossing out another option there. Both power supplies are decent.

The video card your friend suggested is way beyond what you need (at least for a balanced system). Though I wouldn't exactly suggest the 550Ti either. Either the EVGA 560SE, or HIS 7770are my recommendations.

Well, it depends on what you're doing - I've found my 550ti to be fine (at stock settings) for most things @ 1080p, fairly high detail, but for futureproofing it's not a bad idea to get something better.

Hey Wj, That PSU only has 18a on the rails. Not good. I have run into problems with that in the past as when the Graphics got intense, there was enough and started having problems. The one I mentioned has 28a on the rails and should be sufficient. As for the cards, both are good suggestions as well.

I'm just saying that form the experience I had with an Antex Basiq 500w PSU that had 18a on the rails. It did fine until the graphics started getting intense in Oblivion and then the trouble started ( using a 9800GT card ). In my opinion 18a is just not enough on the rails. Ansolutely no headroom there at all.

To be honest, with the Antec Basiq 350W I had in here before (2 12V rails - 10A and 13A), I recall that the machine hard-crashed (just shut off) when I ran WEI inside a Win7 VM. (back when I had the geforce 210 in here) For a while I stopped trying to do that, and then once I got the seasonic I have now (1 40A rail - the label on it is incorrect), I found I didn't have the issue.

Remember that the VP450 does have OCP, so those rails really are separate. I think I'd go with the corsair if I were you.

Oh i guess i did forget to put what price range would be acceptable. 250 is my max of course it doesnt HAVE to be that much. I plan on going a lot of gaming, i have quite a few games on it now to be honest and the problems I'm having with those games are the constant jumping around and very "blocky" movement which drives me nuts. Some of the older games i can run okay with the exception of one or two but with some of the upcoming games (GW2 in particular) it just isn't cutting it on the minimum requirements. I participated in a beta a week or so ago and my pc didnt meet the requirements and although i could play it, i was only able to run the game on low settings and it seemed to be struggling with that.

I would like to get a graphics card that could withstand some high quality graphics seeing as how i will be playing them a lot and preferably one that wont become totally obsolete with next years games lol.

I'm guessing your CPU is 65W, given that the regular 840 is 95W and yours ends with a T (low TDP). I suppose the 550ti, or 7770 would work. Another option is the 6870 - http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814102948 That and the PSU fit in your budget well enough.

The same power supply that failed any professional reviews? Yep, I am familiar with it. There is a night and day difference. 18A is plenty.

Not that it matters, as this sucker will easily deliver 22A per rail.

Coastie, please remember that while you used the Baisq series of crap PSU's from Antec, I have been using EA units in the 350 watt range up to 500 watts for years now. And loaded them up will all sorts of video card goodness. Even going so far as to run a GTX 260 on that 14A rail from my 385. There are differences between powersupplies that can deliver their rated power, and those that cannot.

Then definitely look into that 560SE. It is a tad more powerful than the 550Ti, without the extra cost of the 560Ti. The 7770 is also a great option to consider. Either card will easily tackle all of today's games, and should even do well for the next 3 years. Though in 3 years, don't expect to crank up every setting, you can expect the game to be easily playable.
