The US phone market is driven by cheap (or disguised) pricing in the form of 2yr deals for phones. There should be a chart for phones that consumers by in cash and then we might have a better picture of what the real consumer considers good value. How dare a Telco tell me what to have installed on my phone? Or worse charge for tethering etc etc. You guys ....SMH!

I for one would buy without problem a Google unlocked phone if it had competitive features to that of current offering.

If I could have bought my SII from Google (or samsung) directly and have a vanilla OS on there I would have.

The biggest problem is I foresee is the only operator that doesn't charge you the "subsidized" rate when you bring your own phone is T-mobile... not the best choice for many people. The logic in the US is if you have to pay extra to cover the cost of a phone anyway, why would you pay extra for an unlocked phone?

What is the new strategy that is mentioned in the article? Sounds like things are exactly the same as they have been in the past. As long as Android is open source there will be fragmentation bc any OEM can put android in a phone and sell it. Open source promotes fragmentation, the entire ecosystem will be a mess until Google closes the ecosystem

Google updates Android logo in a bold move to more effectively communicate its new vision for the struggling OS.

Now what we really need is a Google Wireless ISP. Because as for now I have quit all the wireless companies because of the use of data caps and extra fees.

If they had something like that, I would seriously consider it. To be honest, since it seems Deutsche Telekom wants to get rid of T-Mobile anyway, they could sell it to Google. Then, Google could bolster the network a bit, and create more prepaid plans (like the $30 5GB data one I have), to go with the unlocked Nexuses. For instance, I'd love to see pay as you go data. Or better yet, the carrier only sells data, and texts and voice are charged based on the amount of data they actually use (maybe with a time of use rate). I could seriously save a lot of money that way - as it is, I used only 400MB of data and maybe 10 minutes of talk this month, since I generally don't stream things on my phone. (and that includes while I was in LA, using Google Maps most of the time) $30/month seems a bit high for me, considering I use around 10% of the plan's capacity. I don't know, maybe I'm dreaming. But it would be cool.

That's why I hate wireless carriers - if you charge people the subsidized rate whether or not they have a subsidized phone (which is a stupid concept in the first place; basically a payment plan that costs you more in the long run), people will be more likely to opt for the subsidized phone, and you get to lock them in. Plus, most people will see the upfront price tag (only $200 for a GS3? Cool!), and not think of the long-term cost. Personally, I bought an unlocked Nexus ($400), and got a $30 t-mobile prepaid plan, and if I want to change carriers or get a new phone, I can do it whenever I want.
